Mike Tyson explained why Floyd Mayweather is not boxing’s GOAT and incredible record has been beaten

Mike Tyson has always been a boxing historian and often pays tribute to the greats who preceded him.

Even in his 50s as a retired boxer, when he has taken his place among such legends, Iron Mike still appears clearly annoyed whenever icons of the sport are disrespected.

Following the completion of his career, Floyd Mayweather proclaimed himself to be ‘TBE’ – The Best Ever.

He made this claim based on the fact that he retired undefeated with a perfect record of 50-0, surpassing that of former heavyweight world champion Rocky Marciano who quit the sport at 49-0.

Tyson does not agree with the logic of Mayweather though, and made this clear on his Hotboxin’ podcast in a 2019 episode.

 

“Floyd’s a great fighter, don’t get me wrong,” Tyson said. “He had 50 fights.

“Listen, Sugar Ray Robinson had 40 fights. He lost one, then he had a 78-fight winning streak.

“Forty, lost one, then a 78-fight winning streak, goddamn.

“[Julio Cesar Chavez Sr] was 87-0 before he lost.

“Don’t tell me about, ‘You’re the greatest fighter,’ with 50-0.

“You’re great, no doubt about it, but 50-0? Chavez had 90.

“He was fighting like, what? Eight times a year? Against whoever was in the rankings.

“He wasn’t picking, it was, ‘Whoever you want, come on.'”

Mayweather was recently also surpassed by ex-WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng Menayothin, however he’s since been beaten several times and is 55-3.

The American remains the only boxer to retire undefeated with over 50 fights, though continues making money in exhibition bouts to this day.

Mike Tyson Feels There’s Still One Thing Terence Crawford Needs To Prove

He might be pound-for-pound number one in many people’s eyes, but Mike Tyson still thinks Terence Crawford has one thing left to prove.

Crawford is quite possibly the best fighter of his generation after recently claiming the undisputed welterweight title with an impressive knockout win over Errol Spence Jr back in July. It’s his second four-belt haul having also achieved that feat down at light-welterweight.

Right now he has a contracted rematch with Spence to think about but has also spoken of his desire to fight Jermell Charlo.

Speaking on the DAZN Boxing Show, former heavyweight wrecking ball Tyson was asked if Crawford was an all-time great who could have won in any era.

It was then put to him that Crawford has now also got the fan base to fill arenas and Tyson said he needs some harder fights to really go to the next level, at least financially.

Whoever ‘Bud’ fights next, it will not be in defense of his undisputed title having recently been stripped of the IBF championship.

‘Joshua punches like Mike Tyson’

Whilst many have accused Anthony Joshua of holding back the fearsome shots that sent him to the top of the heavyweight division in quick time, one of his opponent’s trainers has now compared the Brit’s shot selection to Mike Tyson’s.

Joshua knocked out all of his first 20 opponents, including the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Carlos Takam and Charles Martin in five world title fights.

Joseph Parker in 2018 was the first man to take him the distance and since then he has lost three times, had two more points wins and just two knockouts.

Speaking on TalkSport, Deontay Wilder’s trainer and former heavyweight, Malik Scott, was musing on Joshua’s size and power just days after Eddie Hearn confirmed terms have been agreed for both men to face each other.

“[People in America think that] he’s a big guy that can fight, he’s got too many muscles. It seems like Stateside people talk more about his build than his skillset. In my opinion, Joshua puts together punches more than any heavyweight in the last 10-15 years, I mean combinations.”

He went on to make a comparison with one of heavyweight boxing’s most legendary names.

“With AJ’s build and his size, I’ve seen him put together punches like an early Mike Tyson put together shots.”

He was then asked to asses where his charge Wilder sits in the pantheon of heavyweight greats and he put him right up there alongside just two other modern fighters.

“I think in any era Deontay Wilder’s presence would have been felt by [Muhammad] Ali, [George] Foreman, everybody. I believe he would be a force to be reckoned with in any era. I think the same with Tyson Fury, but I’m not too sure about the too many of the other guys. Oleksandr Usyk also, he’s better than he gets credit for.”

Fans might say the difference in eras is poor matchmaking, with Wilder and Joshua still unable to put pen to paper and make a fight. That took another hit recently.
