Every golf fan knows about the raging rivalry between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The two golf legends have time and again exchanged sharp words against each other. Furthermore, their matchups on the golf course were always a spectacle to behold. However, sometimes they had to rely on each other for a win.

This fact may come as a surprise to fans, as many consider golf to be an individual sport. But in the past, Mickelson had to rely on an equipment manufacturer, one which turned out to be the prime choice of Tiger Woods.

A time when Phil Mickelson depended on Tiger Woods’s choice to play

During his final years of competing in the PGA Tour, Mickelson left everyone shocked over his choice of equipment. He was competing in the PGA Championship at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort and opted for a piece of equipment preferred by Woods. By doing this, he proved why he deserved to be at the top as the PGA Tour’s most habitual equipment experimenter.

Lefty brought out a Mini Driver alongside his trustworthy Callaway Epic Speed driver. Surprisingly, his new club was a TaylorMade Original One Mini driver with a Fujikura Ventus Black 7x shaft. “I have been using it [the Mini One] a reasonable amount,” he said. With this new club from TaylorMade in his bag, Mickelson had a smooth run in the PGA Championship.

He shot a final-round 73 to capture the tournament, defeating Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen by two strokes, becoming the oldest major champion at 50. After winning in May with the TaylorMade mini driver, Mickelson got a TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver for his next major, the US Open. Coincidently, TaylorMade was also the choice of Tiger Woods.

Close relations between Woods and TaylorMade

Since 2017, Woods has been using equipment made by TaylorMade. Apart from his putter, the 48-year-old prefers to use TaylorMade. Furthermore, the two of them are also entering a new phase of their partnership now.

Rumors have it that Tiger Woods is looking to revitalize his Sunday Red brand under the TaylorMade umbrella. If this happens, this will mark another collaboration between TaylorMade and Woods, with them previously coming together to make P7-TW Irons and PopStroke golf.

While the speculations are still running high, one thing is for certain. What in the past was Tiger Woods’s choice of equipment manufacturer played a major role in his rival Phil Mickelson’s record-breaking victory.

Nick Dunlap has a chance to do something special this weekend.

The 20-year-old sophomore at Alabama is tied for third and two shots back of leader Sam Burns at the PGA Tour’s American Express in La Quinta, California, after two rounds. The tournament normally doesn’t give exemptions to amateurs, but Dunlap is no regular amateur.

Last summer, he won the U.S. Amateur, becoming the second player ever to win a U.S. Junior and U.S. Amateur. The other? Tiger Woods.

Only seven amateurs have ever won a PGA Tour event (none since 1991), and the last am to finish in the top five was Michael Thorbjornsen at the 2022 Travelers Championship.

Here’s a look at the seven amateurs who have won PGA Tour events.

The first amateur to win an event on Tour was Middlehoff, who captured the 1945 North and South Open. He went on to win the Masters.

That same year, Haas became the second am to win on Tour, capturing the 1945 Memphis Invitational. He eventually represented the U.S. in the Ryder Cup.

Frank Stranahan is the only amateur to win multiple times, claiming titles at the 1945 Durham War Bond Tournament and the 1948 Miami Open. He was also a powerlifter known as the “Toledo strongman.”

Phil Mickelson has achieved a lot in his career. From multiple titles to millions of money, he has collected everything in his multiple-decade career. However, his illustrious career has just one dark spot which was his gambling habit. Although he has openly come out stating that he has fought his share of battles with his habit, it is quite certain that he might have lost loads of money.

As per Billy Walters’ book, Mickelson has gambled over $1 billion in his career and lost over $100 million. However, there is no clarity if he has repaid his debt. But as per the same book Walters, his gambling earnings have already covered all his losses.

Even if the loss may not have been covered by his gambling, Phil Mickelson’s multi-million deal with LIV Golf would have certainly covered it.

Back in July, Mikelson gave a reply to someone on X (formerly Twitter) and stated that he has not gambled for years now. He wrote,’

Exploring Phil Mickelson’s Net Worth

The 53-year-old golfer has accumulated a net worth close to over $875 million as per an article by Sportico. While some sources claim he has a net worth close to $400 million.

Mickelson has earned $96,572,310 in his 662 starts on the PGA Tour. Later in, 2022, he decided to switch to LIV Golf and signed a reported deal worth $200 million. This means that $300 million out of his reported $400 million net worth has only come from these two aspects stated.

Whatever Mickelson earned in his career has come from his hard work and sheer dedication. He has been sensational throughout his professional golf career and earned six major titles which itself is a great achievement.

This week, Charlie Woods was back at the PNC Championship, the event where he burst onto the scene three years ago. Over the two days, glimpses of his talent were on display, and it looked like the golf genes were well transferred to him from his father, Tiger Woods.

The question arises: can Charlie Woods make the PGA Tour in the future? As of now, it’s still a far-fetched thought, given that he’s just a 14-year-old who’s still in his growing-up phase. However, he indeed seems to have improved over the past few years. He appears taller, stronger and better than last year. On one par-4, a 321-yard hole, he drove it through the green.

In Tiger’s words, Charlie’s speed has gone up dramatically in just one year. However, he also credited the modern equipment for that change, along with his son’s growth.

This year was Junior Woods’ first full-fledged season in competitive junior golf. According to the Junior Golf Scoreboard, he was ranked No. 1,326 out of 10,616 juniors. He finished 86th among all players for the Class of 2027.

Charlie won two events in 16 appearances this year. His lowest round was 66 at the Notah Begay III Florida Regional qualifier triumph in September.

According to oddsmakers, the 14-year-old is at 1500 to 1 odds of winning a major before turning 22. For reference, Tiger won the 1997 Masters when he was 21 years, three months and 14 days old.

Given that Charlie Woods is the son of the world’s most famous golfer, he receives more attention, but his improvement is commendable considering that he started taking the game seriously only three years ago.

As per one of Golf Digest’s Top 50 Teachers in the US, people need to give the kid more time and stop comparing him with those who have been playing competitive golf for longer.

Charlie Woods is just 14 years old, but he has been in the national spotlight for virtually his entire life. That spotlight will only get brighter as long as Woods follows in his father’s footsteps and pursues a golf career.

The younger Woods has been playing golf since he was an infant, much like his father, and he’s old enough now that he is getting the opportunity to play alongside his father in notable events. Charlie and Tiger Woods first played at the PNC Championship in 2020, finishing as runners-up a year later, and they are teaming up again for the event this year.

For Tiger, the PNC Championship marks another step in his return to golf. He underwent ankle surgery after withdrawing from the Masters in April and didn’t play a competitive round again until an appearance at the Hero World Challenge two weeks ago. There’s no doubt the opportunity to play with his son helped motivate him during his rehab.

Here’s what you need to know about Charlie Woods’ golf prowess and where he ranks among his age group.

How good is Charlie Woods at golf?

Charlie Woods

Woods may not be the phenom his father was at such a young age, but he has a pretty impressive track record for a 14-year-old golfer.

On the Junior PGA South Florida Tour, Woods has finished in the top 20 in six of eight events this year. He is averaging a score of 76.67 as part of the Boys 13-18 Medalist Tour this year, which ranks 71st. Considering Woods is firmly on the younger end of the age group, that’s a fine mark at this point.

Here’s a closer look at Woods’ results in 2023, including two finishes right at the top of Hurricane Junior Golf Tour events.

It appears that Tiger Woods’s 14-year-old son Charlie has a potential apparel partnership in the works with Greyson Clothiers, the golf clothing company most notably worn by Justin Thomas.

Over the weekend, Woods and his son competed in their fourth consecutive PNC Championship. While the 15-major champion sported his iconic Nike swoosh-adorned scripting—including his signature Sunday red polo—the high school freshman seemed to be subtly sporting Greyson half-zips and shirts.

The brand’s wolf emblem appeared on the back of Charlie’s collar during the tournament’s final round. Team Woods competed alongside Thomas and his father Mike during Round 1, who were also decked out in Greyson. It’s well-documented that the Thomases and Woodses have a close off-course relationship.

Although the branding was already quite obvious, an unexpected individual seemed to reference a potential partnership between Charlie and Greyson in a social media post. Larry Fitzgerald, the former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver and avid golfer, re-shared a photo of the teen wearing Greyson on his Instagram story on Sunday evening.

“Welcome to the @greysonclothiers family, Charlie,” Fitzgerald wrote.

The NFL legend added a “#greysonpartner” hashtag, which denotes his own sponsorship with the golf brand. Fitzgerald’s team confirmed the meaning of the hashtag with Sports Illustrated.

Charlie is not listed as a Greyson ambassador on the brand’s website, but the company posted several photos of him wearing the apparel.

It is only natural that Charlie’s Greyson attire added fuel to the recent rumors that the elder Woods, 47, is nearing the end of his contract with Nike.

The possibility of the Nike split was first reported on the No Laying Up podcast. Many are speculating that the PNC Championship could have been Woods’s last event with the sportswear giant. But when reporters asked the five-time Masters champion about his sponsorship at the PNC, he made it clear that it wasn’t something he wanted to discuss.

“I’m still wearing their product,” Woods said in response to a question about the “chatter” surrounding his decades-long Nike deal.

When asked a follow up question, Woods again fired back: “I’m still wearing their product.”

The state of Woods’s contract with Nike has been a hot topic in recent years, ever since he arrived at the 2022 Masters wearing FootJoy golf shoes for the first time in his career. Woods went on the record saying that the shoes offered the best support for his recovering right ankle, which he badly injured in a 2021 car crash.

“Just with the rods and plates and screws that are in my leg, I needed something different, something that allowed me to be more stable,” Woods said at the time.

Nike came out in support of the health-related decision.

“As he continues his return, we will work with him to meet his new needs,” the company wrote.

It is unclear whether Woods will indeed split from Nike, but there is no question that Charlie’s Greyson apparel is an intriguing development.

Right now, Charlie Woods is having the time of his life. His exceptional performance in the past few months at the high school state golf championship and the Notah Begay III golf championship was a marvelous display of his skills. One thing that topped the young star’s experience was having his father by his side as his mentor, guide, and caddie. Tiger Woods, the golf legend, is hugely invested in shaping Charlie’s career.

And it is not just Woods, but the entire golf fandom who wants to see the young prodigy take the reigns of his father’s glory and take it upwards and onwards. But when would he be able to do so?

When can Charlie Woods turn professional?

It is the dream of every amateur golfer to one day turn into a professional golfer and lead a successful career. Tiger Woods himself made his professional debut at the age of 20. At the time, Woods was pursuing his bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Stanford University. But after two years of education, he chose golf over his studies.

So in 1996, Woods dropped out of college to focus full-time on his career. And though Woods has enjoyed an unmatched career, dropping out of college is one of his biggest regrets. And chances are high that Woods will make sure that his son gets a degree before turning pro. What Charlie needs to do to reach his goal of becoming a pro is enroll himself in the PGA Tour’s Q School.

The Q school has four stages: the pre-qualifying stage, the first stage, the second stage, and the final stage. After he successfully manages to clear all rounds of the qualifying school and ends up in the top five, he could earn a card for the PGA Tour. He could also earn his PGA Tour card by playing on the Korn Ferry Tour and scoring one of the 30 cards given to the top finishers. But for that as well, he needs to qualify for the Q School. He could also win a PGA Tour event to get the Tour’s membership card. Woods Jr. could also earn a sponsor’s exemption and win enough points for the card.

The fans could see this happening in the next 6–7 years. It means that Junior Woods could be predicted to turn pro by the age of 20 or 21 after he gets a degree and earns his PGA Tour card. Tiger is the driving force in Charlie’s career. It is only natural that Woods would like his son to keep his options open and not have the same regret as he does.

The five-time Masters champ would not want his son to share the same regrets

Once reflecting upon his regrets in life Woods said in an interview, “The only regret I have in my life is not spending another year at Stanford. I wish I would have done one more year.”  He continued, “All the things I’ve been through are tough. Yes, they have been tough. But they have been great for me. But I wish I had gone one more year at Stanford.” Woods enrolled at Stanford in 1994, and by 1996, he had won three consecutive US amateur titles and the collegiate title.

After that, he left college and went on to become one of the biggest names in golf. Stanford is the go-to university for big names in the golf world. Like his father, Charlie too could enroll himself there to opt for higher studies. He could choose to turn pro while studying like his father or maybe after he is done studying!

Phil Mickelson said again that LIV Golf is here to stay, and this time he brought strong evidence to support his opinion.

On Wednesday, the three-time Masters champion joined the Pat McAfee show on ESPN and explained why Jon Rahm’s recent signing with the Saudi-funded league is a clear sign that LIV isn’t going anywhere.

Mickelson, a fellow Arizona State alum and close friend of Rahm’s, said that Rahm’s decision created a “bridge” for the PGA Tour and LIV Golf to forge a path towards unification.

Although Mickelson reminded viewers that he is not involved with the ongoing PGA Tour and Saudi Public Investment fund negotiations, he is certain that Rahm’s move altered those conversations.

“With Jon Rahm signing on, what it’s done is create a bridge and an opportunity for us to come together,” Mickelson explained. “Because the realization is, LIV isn’t going away. That’s what the talk is. It’s ridiculous.”

Mickelson said Rahm’s move to LIV should prompt organizations to rethink their vision for the future of pro golf—including the four major championships and the PGA Tour.

“If we’re the majors and we want to have the best field and keep on the tradition of these great events, we’re going to have to have the best players in the world and create a qualifying system for these players to get there,” Mickelson continued. “If you’re the PGA Tour and you realize that your most important asset is the quality of field and your players, and you are going to keep losing players if you don’t work together—this is a bridge that is now opening those conversations to start Workimg Together

Phil Mickelson has admitted that he should not be involved in the 2025 Ryder Cup for Team USA because he is ‘a very divisive character’ in golf.

As one of the founding fathers of LIV Golf, the lucrative breakaway organization backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), Mickelson has played a major role in tearing apart the PGA Tour.

Many golfers have since followed, such as Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson, while others like Rory McIlroy have remained loyal to the PGA cause and denounced the LIV rebels.

The price he will pay includes denying him further opportunities to be involved with the Ryder Cup, having made 12 appearances and won the trophy on three occasions – in 1999, 2008 and 2016.

His last appearance came back in 2018, and despite being vice-captain for the 2021 team, he fully appreciates that he has no chance of being captain next year.

“I don’t feel I’m the right guy to be involved with the team because I’m a very divisive character right now, if you will, and I understand that,” Mickelson told Pat McAfee.

“The players on the PGA Tour, there’s a lot of hostilities towards me, and I don’t feel I’d be the best leader for them. I knew I was going to take some hits [after going to LIV Golf]. I’m OK with that.

Phil Mickelson

“And as a divisive individual, I don’t think I’m the best unifier going forward for the Ryder Cup and that’s that’s fine because I’ve had so many great memories with it.”

Mickelson goes from hero to villain

In Mickelson’s case, he has gone from being of the U.S’s most cherished players to the enemy in the eyes of some, but he is willing to live with the criticism after choosing the riches promised by the LIV Tour.

He signed a huge $200 million contract in 2022 just for giving his rights to compete in the PGA Championship. A year on from the launch of the new regime in golf, the 53-year-old believes the future is bright.

“I’m excited about the direction of professional golf,” Mickelson said. “I’m optimistic about the future. I’m optimistic about the growth of LIV and I’m optimistic about the global growth of the game.”

Phil Mickelson was the vice-captain of the 2021 Ryder Cup team. It became one of the highlights of his career, given that he led his team in an international tournament. But he might never have that role back. As far as Bethpage is concerned, his chances of being the 2025 captain of the US team seem bleak.

Moreover, his move to LIV Golf has closed doors in several cases. So a chance to play at the Ryder Cup is even a leverage for the Lefty at this point, where only one LIV golfer played in the Ryder Cup last year. Mickelson assessed his thoughts about the Ryder Cup in an interview.

Phil Mickelson Candidly Speaks His Stance About His Ryder Cup Chances

In the Pat McAfee Show, Mickelson talked about his previous Ryder Cup experiences.

But he reflected on the current scenario and how the team might be ignorant towards him.

Mickelson thinks that a captain brings about unification in a team, and he, on the other hand, is divisive and currently not the right person to have the duty of the entire team. Once, Fred Couples disrespected Phil Mickelson, calling him a ‘nutbag’. Couples also commented on his LIV move saying that it would be a waste of money to put $200 million on Mickelson, at 52, to score 74 and 75.

phil mickelson

Another reason why which Mickelson might not be considered for the Ryder Cup is his gambling controversy. One of his old friends leaked that he bet $400,000 on the 2012 US Ryder Cup team, the year he was playing. Although Mickelson denied the allegations, the golf authorities might not choose a controversial character.

With Mickelson erased from the captain list, the likelihood comes to Tiger Woods. Moreover, the Hall of Famer won the 2002 US Open at the Black Course. The European team will be led by Luke Donald, and given that the captain led his team to triumph in 2023, the team decided to retain the captain. Now, it is time to see who gets to lead the US team in the future.
