Gervonta Tank Davis

Browsing

Gervonta Davis is set to square off against Frank Martin in his upcoming fight. With no major boxing fights scheduled for the near future, all eyes are on this bout. In addition, both fighters have an undefeated professional boxing record, which promises a thrilling showdown. As the anticipation for the clash is increasing by the day, the boxing world has started analyzing and predicting the outcome of this contest.

One such person is former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., who weighed in on the clash between Davis and Martin. After listening to his perspective, Davis and Mayweather Promotions CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, quickly shared their take on it online.

Gervonta Davis and Mayweather Promotions CEO find common ground

‘Tank’ parted ways with Mayweather Promotions because of numerous differences. However, a recent incident drew Ellerbe and Davis together and brought them to a common ground. In an online conversation, they both decided to discount Spence Jr.’s viewpoint about the Davis vs. Martin fight.

Apparently, Spence Jr. believes that Frank Martin will knock out Davis in the 7th or 8th round. Following these remarks, Davis instantly replied through his X account with laughing emojis, “get your money champ”. Additionally, Spence Jr. also mentioned that Martin would dominate the fight. The Mayweather Promotions CEO replied to it and sarcastically asked, “Dominate wut”.

This instantly started a conversation online and fans started pouring their opinions about it as well. But what did Spence Jr. say exactly?

The Long Island fighter has been out of action since his last fight with Terence Crawford. It ended Spence Jr’s undefeated streak as ‘Bud’ won the clash via technical knockout in the 9th round. Spence Jr. was in conversation with Fight Hub TV, where he talked about his return, changing his coach, and how he is planning his future. During the conversation, he was asked to weigh in on the Davis vs. Martin fight.

The 34-year-old boxer believed that Martin was the most skilled and talented fighter that Davis ever fought. “Like he’s one of those, he can’t take those early rounds. And I feel like he’s gonna come in the seventh, eighth round, and hope for a knockout. I feel like Frank gonna dominate him, 1st through 12th round, and win a fight,” said Spence Jr.

He further asserted that Tank is a great fighter, and he is going to put up a good one. But Martin is ready to take it. “I feel like he’s the best fighter he’s ever fought. He gonna see the speed, he gonna see the strength, he gonna see the power that Frank brings to the table on fight night.”

Interestingly, this will be the first time ‘Tank’ will face an African-American fighter, and fans are expecting a thrilling match. Although Ellerbe and Davis are laughing at the prospect of Martin winning the fight, there is space for the tables to turn around. What do you think about it? Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is approaching one year out of the ring, but reports suggest he’s planning a return overseas this summer.

The southpaw from Baltimore was last out against Ryan Garcia, adding a 27th stoppages and 29th win to his record via a body shot in the seventh round.

It was one of the most lucrative fight nights of 2023, and entered the top five gates in Las Vegas history. ‘Tank’ was unable to build on the momentum afterwards as he was detained under house arrest and subsequently prison from a 2020 hit and run case.

Now the sole WBA Lightweight World Champion given Devin Haney’s decision to move up a division and vacate his belts, fans have been clamouring for news on the 29-year-old’s return. He was expected by some to feature in PBC’s first event with new broadcast partner Amazon Prime, but things haven’t played out that way.

Instead, The Ring Magazine now reports that multiple sources say Davis is slated to fight in the United Kingdom in summertime.

Whilst the news comes with no potential opponents linked, there will now be speculation as to which British star might occupy the other corner.

Should the report be confirmed, it will be ‘Tank’s second fight in Great Britain, the first being a third round stoppage of Liam Walsh back in 2017 at the Copper Box.

The Ring has learned that Gervonta “Tank” Davis is planning a summer return in the United Kingdom, multiple sources confirmed. Davis, the 29-year-old power punching southpaw, is viewed as the face of boxing. He will return after over a year out of the ring.

With Premier Boxing Champions’ multi-year deal with Amazon Prime Video in December, 2023, Davis will be a headlining attraction to the new venture.

He saw a very promising 2023 derailed when he pled guilty in May 2023 to four counts of traffic violations stemming from a November 2020 crash that injured four people.

The Ring’s No. 2-rated lightweight contender, Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) last fought on April 22, 2023, when he stopped Ryan Garcia in seven rounds in a lightweight megafight in Las Vegas that drew 1.2 million pay-per-view buys.

Tank handed Garcia’s his first defeat, after beginning 2023 by handing Hector Luis Garcia his first career setback in January 2023.

No opponent is set yet.

Davis has a history of fighting in England. In May 2017, he knocked out Liam Walsh in three in his first IBF junior lightweight title defense at the Copper Box Arena, in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in Middlesex.

Davis is one of boxing’s prime attractions. Despite a truncated 2023, he was among the top nominees for Fighter of the Year by RingTV.com and the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).

The success of the 1.2 million pay-per-view buys for the Davis-Garcia fight is a good indication.

A million buys are considered today’s gold standard in the pay-per-view world. Davis-Garcia took place before a sellout crowd of 20,842 at the T-Mobile Arena. The gate revenue was $22.8 million. The 1.2 million Davis-Garcia buys translated to $102 million, and a total revenue of $136.8 million when considering merchandise sales, international sales and commercial revenue—and that’s an estimate on the low side. The total promotion generated close to $150 million.

The fight took place among a sea of celebrities—the kind Mike Tyson used to draw in his prime. The T-Mobile Arena was filled with NFL stars, like the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce, movie stars and A-listers galore.

Davis has hardly been challenged, other than by Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz in December 2021. He currently holds a minor WBA title, though he has grown beyond titles.

He is a compact, lightweight Mike Tyson. He has stopped 27 of 29 opponents, the only two survivors being the aforementioned Cruz and German Meraz, who went the full six against Davis in October 2014 in Davis’ ninth pro fight. Still, Meraz tasted the canvas twice in the fight.

Davis has handed seven fighters their first defeat, including former IBF junior lightweight titlist Jose Pedraza, WBA junior lightweight titlist Mario Barrios, Rolly Romero, Ryan Garcia and Hector Luis Garcia, the former WBA junior lightweight titlist.

Tank’s resume also includes the first stoppage victory over Leo Santa Cruz.

So far in his career, the only one who has gotten in Davis’ path, however, has been Tank himself. He was stripped of the IBF junior lightweight title on the scales against Francisco Fonseca, on the Floyd Mayweather-Connor McGregor undercard in August 2017, and his recent brush with the law. In July 2023, Davis was released from a detention center on Friday, July 14, 2023, after serving 44 days after a judge ruled on June 1 that he violated the terms of his house arrest.

According to multiple sources who know the fighter, Davis has been back diligently training and working hard to return this summer in the United Kingdom.

The former WBA lightweight champ, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, sparked numerous headlines when he converted to Islam a few days back. Reports said that he took the name Abdul Wahid after his conversion. ‘Tank’ is making headlines once more recently. But this time the fans may be even more excited since it’s about his upcoming matchup. A recent update on ‘X’ revealed that Davis may take to the ring on 30 March this year.

It also revealed that the famous Puerto Rican boxer, Subriel Matias, will be ‘Tank’s’ next rival. However, the scrap between the two is still in its preliminary stages. The update further revealed that the IBF super lightweight world title will be on the line for this fight. Its caption read:

However, this update came from a rather unpopular account on ‘X’ named ‘NDJ’, who calls himself a boxing fan. This is why several fans questioned the source of his information and doubted its authenticity.

But a look at the current scenario will reveal that another noted boxing star may come up as Gervonta Davis’ next rival. It also won’t be wrong to say that the fans will have their minds blown if this one materializes.

Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney’s online beef may end up in an in-ring clash

Lately, the noted WBC super lightweight champ, Devin Haney, fired a shot at Davis through one of his ‘X’ updates. He implied that Davis has always tried to duck a fight against him despite multiple offers. His update also highlighted the post of the former two-time welterweight champ boxer, Shawn Porter, who stated that a ‘Tank’ vs. ‘The Dream’ fight will never happen despite the massive interest of fans.

But Davis fired back at both Haney and Porter with a single ‘X’ update. He wrote:

Well, nobody knows where this beef between these three will stop. But Davis may have given out an indication that he is ready to accept Haney’s challenge. Most boxing fans will probably love to hear that a Davis vs. Haney bout is awaiting them.

Bob Arum does not promote Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, but he does represent some men he thinks the Baltimore boxer should face and has named three potential opponents.

Davis has brushed aside all the men he has faced in the squared circle to date. His record reads 29 wins from 29, with 27 knockouts. Some of his victims include most recently Ryan Garcia, whom he stopped with a body shot in April last year, and before that Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, Isaac Cruz, Rolando Romero, Hector Luis Garcia have all fallen foul of his power since 2020.

Davis is currently the WBA lightweight champion and plenty of the biggest fights he could take going forward would involve him working with Arum’s Top Rank promotion.

Speaking to Boxing Scene Arum sang the praises of ‘Tank.’

He then named the three fighters in his stable he would like to pair him with – and beat him.

Right now, ‘Tank’ has no scheduled fights while Lopez – who has been calling out Terence Crawford – is due to come up against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8 at super-lightweight. It is rumoured that Lomachenko will fight George Kambosos Jr at some point soon for the vacant IBF lightweight title. Stevenson doesn’t currently have a bout pencilled in to defend his recently won WBC 135 belt.

Isaac Cruz has given up on his years-long pursuit of a rematch with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

For now.

The popular lightweight from Mexico City has a new target in his sights. Actually an old one, as Cruz hopes to unearth past business with Ryan Garcia.

“I am no longer waiting on Gervonta Davis/Abdul Wahid (Davis’ chosen Muslim name),” Cruz told BoxingScene.com in a quote provided through Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions. “Ryan Garcia has been calling us out for the last few fights. That’s the fight I want and what my promoter wants for me. Call your attorney, Guadalupe Valencia and quit running, poodle.”

Cruz (25-2-1, 17KOs) has won three straight since his narrow points loss to Baltimore’s Davis (29-0, 27KOs) in a December 2021 WBA ‘Regular’ lightweight title fight he accepted on five weeks’ notice. The 25-year-old contender has applied heavy pressure on a second bout versus Davis, with the benefit of a full training camp for both in preparation for each other.

The cries fell on deaf ears, even though both are under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) umbrella and Cruz has risen to the top of the WBA lightweight rankings.

Gervonta Davis

Cruz now turns to Garcia (24-1, 20KOs), who rebounded from an April 22 knockout loss to Davis with an eight-round knockout of Mexico’s Oscar Duarte last December 2 in Houston, Texas.

Garcia has since publicly called for—in order—a shot at WBA junior welterweight titleholder Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (15-1, 13KOs), a high-profile showdown versus unbeaten two-division champ Devin Haney (31-0, 15KOs), and back to Romero, whom he hopes to face this spring.

A fight between Garcia and Cruz was previously ordered by the WBC in 2022 as a planned title eliminator. Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions publicly expressed interest in the fight. Cruz was unavailable at the time as was already committed to a fight versus Eduardo ‘Zurdito’ Ramirez.

With both free at the moment, Cruz believes there is no time like the present to pick up where they left off a couple of years ago.

“Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz was unavailable for various reason,” Sean Gibbons, Cruz’s rep and hype man, told Boxing Scene. “But the time is now. Pitbull has accepted Ryan Garcia’s challenge. This is the fight we want for Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, no question. So, what’s your excuse now, Ryan?”

Devin Haney is living a sweet moment after his win over Regis Prograis and now there are several possibilities for “The Dream.” The first is to defend the super lightweight title against the number one WBC challenger Sandor Martin, as long as he wins his fight this Saturday; the second is to unify with Rolly RomeroTeofimo Lopez or Subriel Matias; the third is to move up a category, an option that he has already hinted at.

The truth is that because of his status, he is in a privileged position to choose. But the reality is that Haney must remain in the 140-pound category (63.5 kg) despite the sacrifice that may entail. He was able to gain 25 pounds (11.33 kg) in the rehydration period against Prograis.

One thing that Haney is particularly proud of is his meticulous approach to nutrition with the SNAC (Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning) system, whose founder and CEO Victor Conte was in the shadows for a few months due to the BALCO scandal, a laboratory similar to SNAC. Because of his weight-gaining abilities and work with SNAC, “The Dream” wanted to respond to critics who say he has an advantage.

Gervonta Davis

“I’ve been doing the same thing for years, just killing myself to make weight after the weigh-in….. The world said I had pads on my fists and I was this and that! Now, once I go up, they pull out every excuse in the book,” said Haney. “I didn’t beat Regis by bullying him with my weight, I beat him because of my skills.”

Devin Haney challenges Tank Davis

Haney also called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who would have to move up to super lightweight to make a fight between them happen.

Tank is a p—y…. He always says I want to fight when I already have a fight scheduled. Well now I’m free! Let’s make it happen,” Haney said.

Would Davis want to enter this fight knowing that such a dangerous opponent is capable of moving up 25 pounds before the fight? The answer is no.

IBF junior welterweight champion Subriel Matias 20-1 (20) retained his title with a fifth-round knockout of mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev 23-1 (20) at the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican, who was making the first defence of the belt he won by fifth-round knockout against previously undefeated Jeremias Ponce 31-1 (21) in February, admitted before the fight that it takes him a few rounds to adjust to southpaws and that proved to be true against the left-handed Ergashev, a 31-year-old Uzbek who goes by the nickname ‘Descendant of Tamerlane’.

Ergashev started the fight well but once Matias got dialed in, it was only a matter of time.

Matias wrested control of the bout in the fourth round and increased the punishment in the fifth. A dazed and confused Ergashev returned to his stool and stayed there when the bell sounded to start the sixth.

Much of the bout was contested at close quarters with Ergashev clearly backing his own power to wilt Matias before the champion got to him. It was a game plan that ultimately did not work out in his favour.

Matias said he was happy to weather the early storm, confident that Ergashev could not hurt him.

“It’s my team that makes that happen,” he said. “I knew he didn’t have the power to knock me out… so that’s when I knew I could start to attack.

“For a southpaw I need three or four rounds to decipher them and then what you saw tonight is usually what happens.”

After the bout Matias called up a big name that lurks just one division south of where he campaigns.

“Gervonta Davis, come over here and fight!” he said.

Before the fight Matias said his loss to Petros Ananyan three years ago served as a wake-up call and forced him to rededicate himself to his career.

“The Subriel Matias that you saw in 2020 is nothing like the one that you’re gonna see right now,” he said.

“Like right now, I’m at 300 percent compared to the one that was in Vegas in 2020, where I admit that, you know, that I was smoking a lot of pot. I had vices that didn’t allow me to be at a hundred percent. But now, 300 percent and ready to show the fans that the champ is here and ready to put on a great show.”

Matias continued: “I can’t say that I consider myself the favourite. What I do have is the confidence in myself after what I’ve done in training camp. But to say that I’m a big favorite would be assuming a lot of things considering that boxing is unpredictable.

“Look at what Ananyan did in 2020. So I am not about to underestimate my opponent and I am gonna go out there and bear the fruits of my preparation.”
