The new year has begun with one less WBA belt in existence.

Devin Haney was formally removed as WBA ‘Super’ lightweight champion in the sanctioning body’s latest ratings update which published Tuesday. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is now the sole recognized WBA titleholder at the weight, having previously held WBA ‘Regular’ status.

The move was expected, when Haney (31-0, 15KOs) declared in late November that he was prepared to abandon his unified lightweight championship to fully compete at junior welterweight. The announcement was made prior to his WBC 140-pound title win over Regis Prograis. Haney delivered a tour-de-force performance atop a December 9 DAZN Pay-Per-View event from Chase Center in his birth town of San Francisco, California.

Despite his prior declaration, Haney was still the recognized WBA ‘Super’ lightweight champion as of the December 1 WBA rankings and headed into his fight versus Prograis.

Baltimore’s Davis (29-0, 27KOs) has yet to publicly comment on his newfound status as full titleholder. The only recent round of news involving the two-division titlist and boxing superstar was his recent conversion to Islam and that he chose the name Abdul Wahid (“Servant of The One”) upon his acceptance of Allah.

Monday’s development barely changes things for Davis, whose current title reign dates back to a December 2019 twelfth-round knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa. The only real change is the absence of a primary title ahead of his belt, which means he is free to further unify the division if that is the road he chooses to travel. The only other active lightweight titlist is Shakur Stevenson, who claimed the vacant WBC belt in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Edwin De Los Santos last November 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The IBF and WBO belts are both currently vacant. The IBF belt will iikely be at stake in a proposed Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos fight targeted for this spring. Denis Berinchyk would then become the leading candidate to fight for the vacant WBO title versus an opponent to be determined.

Davis has not fought since a seventh-round knockout of Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KOs) last April 22 at T-Mobile Arena. The bout was fought at a 136-pound catchweight in a non-title fight, with Davis’ WBA title not at stake.

It mattered little to the masses; the fight sold a reported 1.2 million pay-per-view units and generated an estimated $22.8 million live gate atop a Showtime Pay-Per-View that served as the highest grossing event of 2023.

Davis last defended his WBA title in a stoppage win over previously unbeaten WBA junior lightweight titlist Hector Garcia after nine rounds. Garcia (no relation to Ryan) moved up in weight to unsuccessfully challenge Davis last January 6 at MCI Center in Washington, D.C.

No decision was yet made by the WBA as to whether Davis will be ordered to make a mandatory title defense; his last such obligation came in a May 2021 knockout win over then-unbeaten Rolando Romero.

Isaac Cruz and William Zepeda—a pair of contenders from Mexico—are the highest-ranked WBA lightweight contenders. Both have frequently expressed an interest in facing Davis.

Cruz has been teased as a leading candidate to next face Davis. Such a fight would represent a rematch to their December 2021 meeting, won by Davis via unanimous decision which snapped his sixteen-fight knockout streak. Cruz has since won three in a row, including a unanimous decision over Giovanni Cabrera last July 29 in Las Vegas.

Zepeda is due to fight in the first quarter of 2023, though an opponent was not yet identified as this goes to publication. The 27-year-old southpaw earned knockout victories over Jaime Arboleda and Merctio Gesta for his two bouts in 2023.

Gervonta Davis has been accused of running an insurance scam by fans shortly after the bunch of houses he bought spontaneously burned down just days after the purchase.

The undefeated “Tank” Davis acquired the properties in his home neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester in Baltimore, Maryland and aimed to renovate them into affordable homes to give back to the community where he grew up

But a fire would engulf and damage the building, although firefighters would eventually get it under control. The exact cause of the blaze is not yet known to investigators so naturally theories of an insurance scam flew around social media.

Fans react

One user wrote on Twitter, now known as X, “Insurance money hitting for him he couldn’t even wait a week lol”.

Another commented, “Bro didn’t waste time committing insurance fraud”.

A third said, “Burnt down right after he buys the block?? Very very suspicious. Why people hating on their own kind”.

And a fourth wrote: “It’s always a dirty game when you start making momental moves to change the culture”.

Bob Arum picks three fighters who would beat Davis

Bob Arum is a prominent figure in boxing, renowned as a boxing promoter and the founder of Top Rank and has promoted numerous high-profile boxing matches, representing iconic fighters and playing a pivotal role in the sport’s promotion and business development.

When asked who he thought would beat Gervonta Davis in a fight, he chose Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez and Vasyl Lomachenko.

“All three I think would beat Davis, I really believe that,” Arum said to TalkSport. “But that’s why they do the fights, they get in the ring to determine who is better.

“I think that he [Gervonta Davis] is the real deal, that’s why we’re talking about him. He is a hell of a performer, a terrific athlete, terrific boxer, but so are the other three guys you mentioned.”

Sometimes, when things are going your way, you can get ahead of yourself. Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela can admit that hubris began seeping into his bloodstream with each highlight-reel-worthy knockout.

Against Edwin De Los Santos in 2022, Valenzuela (13-2, 9 KOs) believed that once he connected, their showdown would be called off. Their matchup didn’t go incredibly long, but with both men hitting the canvas, a jam-packed crowd in the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, stood on their feet, waiting to see what would happen next.

In the third, it was Valenzuela who was on the wrong end of a brutal round, forcing referee Ray Corona to call things off. Just a few months later, he hit rock bottom, losing a controversial decision to Chris Colbert.

The 24-year-old had some serious soul-searching to do. Once he looked in the mirror and realized that he needed to improve, the immediate results have been exactly what he was hoping for.

Just a few short weeks ago, Valenzuela found himself standing across the ring from Colbert again. This time around, he dominated him to the tune of a sixth-round stoppage win. The victory was lovely, but the WBA sanctioning body made it sweeter once it was revealed that his showdown against Colbert was an official title eliminator.

Gervonta Davis

Now, with the ball somewhat in his court, Valenzuela is hoping to match up with Gervonta Davis. On numerous occasions, the Mexican native has called out the hard-hitting star. But, in the eyes of fans, his contemporaries, and prognosticators, a showdown with Davis would end horrifically for him.

Valenzuela can hear his critics from a mile away. He doesn’t have a problem with anyone doubting him but to a large extent, there’s a reason why he looked awful against De Los Santos.

“I think people say that because they see the fight with me and Edwin,” said Valenzuela to Fight Hub TV when asked if it bothers him that most aren’t giving him a chance against Davis. “I wasn’t as focused. He taught me a helluva lesson. I wasn’t focused.”

For the most part, just about everyone in the lightweight division wants a piece of Davis. Some of it has to do with Davis being one of boxing’s cash cows. Also, he’s viewed as one of the best fighters in the world.

Putting together a game plan to take Davis down wouldn’t be easy but it’s something Valenzuela believes his team can do. No matter if his corner instructs him to box from the outside or get in close, Valenzuela has a feeling that if he lands on the tip of Davis’ chin, the pound-for-pound star won’t wake up until the following morning.

“If I fought Tank, I would fight him very smart. I would have my feet under me and one thing that you can’t count out is knockout power. I’m a dangerous fighter. I wouldn’t be surprised if I knocked him out.”

Gervonta Davis leaked a direct message from promoter Eddie Hearn before calling out Bill Haney and Devin Haney on Friday night.

Boxing fans are desperate to see lightweight contender Davis vs former undisputed champion Devin Haney.

The rivalry between the two fighters has ramped up following Haney’s victory over Regis Prograis last weekend, which sealed the WBC lightweight crown.

However, Davis took issue with Haney rehydrating to 165lbs to win a 140lbs title on the day of the fight.

It is understood Haney’s refusal to entertain a catchweight and rehydration clause for a fight with Davis is causing problems.

On Friday, Davis released a screenshot of a direct message from promoter Hearn on social media, which read: “Let’s talk!”

The American boxer simply replied: “No.”

‘Tank’ then went live on Instagram to explain his actions, calling out Haney and his father Bill in the process.

Davis said: “If they wanna make the fight happen, tell them they know who to call. They’re broke. I’m supposed to get on the phone with Al [Haymon] tonight to talk to him about what these n***** are talking about.

“You see, Eddie [Hearn] has been in my DMs. No, I want your boss. If they want to make the fight happen, they know who to call, and I’m by the phone. All of them.”

Bill Haney then went live on Instagram to give his own version of events, claiming Davis rejected a guaranteed $20million to fight his son.

“I’m talking to you, the ex-face of boxing. This is the Devin Haney era,” said Bill Haney on Instagram.

““Bro, you turned down $20m guaranteed. $20m, bro. Are you serious, bro?”

Looking ahead isn’t something that Chris Colbert normally indulges in but he knows he’s just one win away from landing numerous big-time fights.

Colbert’s time at 135 pounds was supposed to be short-lived. However, after taking a look at the barren landscape at 130, Colbert figured that it made little to no sense to go back down in weight. So, with the Brooklyn native getting ready to run things back with Jose Valenzuela, the 27-year-old already knows who he wants to face immediately after.

“I want Gervonta Davis,” said Colbert to BoxingScene.com during a recent interview. “Gervonta Davis is the best guy in the 135-pound division. Gervonta Davis is a tremendous fighter.”

For the first time in a long time, Colbert (17-1, 6 KOs) handled this particular training camp a bit differently. Usually, Colbert’s camps take place in the heart of Brooklyn. But, with coach Sosa, his current trainer, forced to deal with prior obligations, Colbert packed his bags and headed down to Baltimore.

Colbert worked closely with Barry Hunter and several members of Davis’ team. He also worked side by side with Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) himself.

There was something inspiring about hitting the pads and doing drills next to a three-division champ who just so happens to be a multi-millionaire and one of the most popular fighters in the sport. Of course, Colbert wants that fame and fortune for himself. With that said, the loquacious contender appreciates who Davis has become and everything he went through to finally get there.

“Watching him motivated me,” continued Colbert. “That’s a young black man that came from the trenches like me making millions. He can do whatever he wants and step the way he wanna step. He motivates me to keep going and work harder and be a better fighter. I like working around fighters like that.”

Gervonta Davis has been accused of actively avoiding Devin Haney after the best was named one of the best in boxing today.

Following Haney’s win over Regis Prograis, Davis was the name on everybody’s lips for a massive Pay Per View clash in 2024.

However, Bill and Devin Haney both state that “Tank” is looking at other opponents for a potential March return. Haney is not on that list, according to them both.

Gervonta Davis vs Devin Haney

Devin said: “Tank doesn’t want to fight. If he really wanted to fight, he would be trying to build up the fight. Instead, he’s trying to knock it down or say I’m only selling because of this or that.

“If he really wanted to fight me, he would say it’s a big fight and the best fight for boxing. He only talks down on the fight. But like I’ve said, they say everything, but let’s fight.”

Asked what was next for him if Davis was unavailable, Haney added: “I don’t know. I want to talk to my dad and see what’s next. I want to do a fight at 147, but there’s a lot of big fights at 140.

“I’m into making the biggest, best fights in the sport of boxing. That’s where I’m at. I became undisputed at 135, made history, and am in the history books forever.

Gervonta Davis

“Now I want to make the biggest fights happen, for the most money, to be honest. My dad’s been looking at the 147 lb landscape. You would have to ask him.”

Tank should fight Haney

When prompted for a response, Bill immediately fired at Davis.

“Tank and his team have consistently lied to the people. So a message to all the fans is to stop letting Tank and his team p— on your head and tell you it’s raining with these insignificant fights.

“They are saying it’s ‘for the culture.’ Devin represents the culture. He represents boxing and what boxing should be and what boxing is.”

On whether Ryan Garcia would be an alternative target, Devin concluded: “That’s a possibility, that’s a mega-fight. I’ve been calling out Ryan for years now, and it’s good to hear that he finally wants to fight.

“It sucks that it came after he took an L, but it was only a matter of time. But now he finally wants to call me out. At the end of the day, it’s still a big fight.

“Like I said, I want to make the best fights, biggest fights happen. What’s crazy is I saw Ryan right before I went into training camp. He didn’t say anything about fighting me.

“So, I literally was shopping. We ran into each other at a store. He didn’t say anything about fighting.”

Devin Haney achieved a stellar victory against Regis Prograis in their title bout for the WBC super lightweight championship. The fight proved to be an easy affair for the former undisputed lightweight champion who dismantled Prograis throughout the fight. As he becomes a two-division champion, all eyes are on him as he makes his next move.

Meanwhile, Haney has expressed his desire to face big names such as Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta DavisRyan Garcia, or Teofimo Lopez. However, it seems that he might end up having to fight someone else. So who is this opponent he inherited after defeating Prograis?

Garcia, Lopez, and Stevenson, and Davis are not in line to fight Haney

Devin Haney, fresh off his triumph against Regis Prograis, is now set to defend his WBC light welterweight title against mandatory challenger Sandor Martin. Prograis was granted an exception from facing Martin due to the Haney fight. This now leaves Haney with an obligation to face Martin to defend his newly acquired belt.

Gervonta and Haney Shakur

Moreover, Martin will definitely be a tough opponent for ‘the Dream’. Martin even gave Teofimo Lopez a run for his money in their encounter last year and only lost to a controversial split decision.

However, Devin Haney’s father seems laser-focused on one fighter whom he would want to tick off his hit list.

Bill Haney blasts Gervonta Davis

Even though, Martin is already set to be his mandatory opponent, it seems that Haney has set his sights on Davis. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Bill Haney emphasized the singular fight that truly makes sense for his son, Devin – a showdown with Gervonta Davis. Expressing their readiness post the Prograis battle, Bill boldly challenged others, stating, “So, f**k all that other sh*t. I’m going to see who gon’ mention ‘Tank’ other than us.”

As the Haney camp echoes Davis’ name, Bill is convinced of the avoidance tactics, claiming, “Tank don’t want to fight Devin, period.” This anticipation of a face-off with Davis adds a layer of intrigue to Devin Haney’s promising career.

Bill Haney wants the Davis matchup, affirming their willingness to even fight at 140 lbs. Moreover, he repeatedly chanted, “Tank, Tank, Tank. Where you at Tank?” Despite this, Bill predicts Davis will sidestep the challenge, reinforcing the notion that the clash might still remain elusive.

Devin Haney is just a few hours away from making his super lightweight debut. And while his focus is mainly on knocking off Regis Prograis, he knows that his name will always be linked to some of his contemporaries.

There are a few fighters that come to mind. Ryan Garcia, before Haney collected all of the lightweight hardware, was a fighter Haney wanted to eventually take on. But, with little to no negations taking place, their showdown was nothing more than a pipe dream.

Even now, with Garcia hoping for a matchup against Rolando “Rolly” Romero, Haney believes that at some point, they’ll meet up.

Recently, Haney was asked to put Prograis aside and place his attention on some of his young rivals. When asked to give his thoughts on Garcia and his overall skills, he was nothing but complimentary.

“I think he’s good,” said Haney recently. “I think he has skills, speed, power.”

Gervonta Davis

Garcia, just last week, took care of business against Oscar Duarte, something Haney was visibly impressed by. With that said, he doesn’t consider the 25-year-old an otherworldly talent. Gervonta Davis, on the other hand, is a different animal.

At 29, the pay-per-view star has racked up world titles in three separate divisions. In addition to filling up his trophy case with hardware, Davis has shown that his skills are second to none. Arguably, the Baltimore native put together his best year yet, stopping both Ryan Garcia and the previously undefeated Hector Luis Garcia.

Before officially making the move up in weight, Haney was hoping that both he and Davis would come to an agreement and battle it out. Nevertheless, with Haney taking his talents to 140 pounds, and eventually, to the welterweight division, he’s losing hope that they’ll face off.

Still, despite both sides fulminating over who would actually win, Haney revealed that not only is Davis a great fighter, but he’s one of the best ever.

“He’s an all-time great.”

Getting the legend, Mike Tyson to not only acknowledge but also compare a fighter to himself is not a feat just about anyone can achieve. However, Isaac Cruz, the fighter from Mexico, made it possible.

Post Ryan Garcia‘s loss against Gervonta Davis, he saved his career by defeating Oscar Duarte. After the fight between Garcia and Duarte, Cruz in an Instagram story, tagged Davis and Garcia both with a picture of himself pointing toward the camera. This was nothing short of a call-out by the fighter. Davis has made sure to respond to it.

Isaac Cruz renews rivalry with Gervonta Davis

The feud between Cruz and Davis traces back to December 2012. Davis ascended to boxing stardom fueled by explosive knockouts and the backing of mentor Floyd Mayweather. Cruz, a late replacement for Rolando Romero, proved skeptics wrong as he presented “Tank” with a formidable challenge on short notice. The bout at Los Angeles’ Staples Center unfolded as a closely contested 12-round affair, contrary to expectations. Despite the tough competition, Davis narrowly secured a unanimous decision victory, showcasing the unanticipated difficulty of the matchup.

Davis reposted the story on his Instagram, but not without adding a hard-hitting response of his own. “I beat yo a** with one hand rock head,” wrote Davis suggesting it would barely demand any effort from his side to end the argument with Cruz once and for all. Possibly, we will soon get to see whether the claims are true or not.

Gervonta Davis

Fans have been demanding a rematch between the duo for a while now. Fortunately, it might finally materialize. According to recent reports, the rematch between Davis and Cruz is scheduled for the official launch of the PBC on AMAZON in early 2024. American boxer Gervonta “Tank” Davis will once again face Mexican boxer Isaac Jonathan Cruz.

The exact date and venue for the rematch will be disclosed in the coming weeks. Gervonta Davis maintains an undefeated record, while Cruz has encountered two losses, one of which was against Davis in 2021. Popularly known as the Pitbull, Cruz surprised many with an outstanding performance in their previous encounter, displaying a formidable fight that pushed Gervonta to his limits.

After securing his win against Giovanni Cabrera, Cruz is on the lookout for his next prey. As he missed a victory against Davis in their last fight, he might have a chance to avenge his loss this time around. Which of the fighters do you think will be able to stand true to his word?

Gervonta Davis beat Ryan Garcia conclusively earlier this year, but the latter says an injury played a big part.

‘Tank’ Davis dropped and stopped Garcia in April at a catchweight of 136lbs. In the aftermath, Garcia says he was weight drained and also hinted at an injury.

In an interview with The Last Stand, he confirmed that theory, saying that ‘a separated rib’ from training camp affected his preparation.

Gervonta-Davis

Davis caught wind of the comments and took to social media to say it was ‘over’ for his rival.

Garcia is angling for a rematch, but is one division up now, his maiden fight being a catchweight bout with Oscar Duarte.
