After Gervonta Davis’ (now Abdul Wahid) legal troubles, his coach, Calvin Ford, found himself in deep waters. Following Davis’ 44-day stint in a Baltimore jail, Ford, the esteemed coach of the prominent American boxing star, had found himself in a difficult situation with the authorities. However, after almost a month, the coach has finally been released.

On December 29, Baltimore police arrested Ford as he exited the Upton Boxing Gym in Baltimore, Maryland. This was in connection with an incident that took place in Las Vegas. The reason for Ford’s arrest was linked to felony assault charges in Nevada. Ford faced two charges of ‘assault with a deadly weapon. Fortunately, however, he has been released since and informed the fans about this through his Instagram stories.

Coach Calvin posted a series of pictures and videos on his Instagram stories after his release. One of the pictures was captioned, “Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing. You’ll see clearly soon enough.” Like the strong team that they are, Davis and his crew have been standing in support of the coach since the start of the fiasco started

More details are yet to come regarding the conditions of his release. Soon after his release, though, the trainer reached the airport and came back to Baltimore with his team and his close ones. Many team members had vouched for his innocence since the arrest and had refuted the alleged charges.

Gervonta Davis’ Coach and Calvin Ford’s right-hand man defends Ford

Kenny Ellis, the second half of the dynamic duo responsible for Gervonta Davis’ training, addressed the situation in an interview with ‘Fannon International Boxing Channel’. Ellis provided detailed insights into Ford’s arrest, refuting the charges against him. When asked about the circumstances of Ford’s arrest, Ellis defended him, stating, “They picked him up on some false accusations that somebody accused him of doing.”

The host pressed for details on the charges. Responding to this, Ellis disclosed that Ford was accused of assault with a deadly weapon by two individuals. Ellis emphasized Ford’s innocence, stating, It was assault with a deadly weapon from two people, and the question is if that happened and I was with Calvin, why am I not locked up.” He went on to add, [I] want to let the people know that he’s been falsely accused, and the truth will rise to the top.”

Conor Benn’s frustration is explainable. Once poised to rule over boxing in England, today, he finds himself at the lower end of the barrel, looking for fights that match his caliber. In his yearning for better fights, he exclaims, “Just make it happen!”

In October 2022, the biggest fight of his career, against his oldest rival, Chris Eubank Jr., was called off. Days before the event was to happen, he tested positive twice for a banned substance, clomifene. Initially suspended for it, the WBC cleared his name from the charge, citing over-consumption of eggs as being responsible for the heightened clomifene levels. However, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) and UKAD disagreed, disallowing him from fighting in the UK. While he recently fought in the US, his opponent was relatively unknown. He has also been unable to secure the fights that will push him toward the big leagues. To Boxing Social, the undefeated fighter expressed his disappointment and frustration.

“What more do you want me to do?” questions Conor Benn

In his career, before the drug fiasco, he was someone everyone wanted to fight and do business with. After the drug fiasco, the fighter still believes he is a big draw. “I’m a promoter’s dream. What more do you want me to do? I’m the most wanted man in Britain, the most wanted man in the welterweight division,” states Conor Benn. Currently promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, Benn has so far managed to fight once against Rodolfo Orozco last year.

Come 3rd February, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, he will fight undefeated Peter Dobson. However, his yearning for the elite names remains as he looks for fights, “From Haney, from Brook, from Eubank, from Gervonta, from Taylor, from Kelly. What more do you want me to do?” laments Benn who is now seeking fights against Devin Haney, Kell Brook, Chris Eubank Jr., Gervonta Davis, Josh Taylor, and even Josh Kelly.

After almost a year of being away, the undefeated fighter now demands the big fights, against the big names. “I ain’t fought for a year and a half, I’m still there, still top of people’s tongue, still at the forefront of people’s minds. In these mega fights. You know, so it’s like, it’s frustrating not because of Eubank because I couldn’t care less about it. Just a big name. Just anyone. Like any of the names mentioned. Just make it happen,” states Conor Benn.

On his path to these elite fights, his promoter and he believes the upcoming February clash will open those doors for them.

Ticket to the big names

In late December, the potential of a Chris Eubank Jr. fight fell flat for the promoter-boxer duo. Looking past it, they announced the upcoming Peter Dobson fight. Was the fight to prove Benn’s relevance in the ring, or was it strategic? Hearn said, “This is a big night for Conor where he can send a message to the world champions and elite names that he’s ready to take them on in 2024.”

Despite the fight not being the one he was chasing, Benn assures to undertake it with dedication. “I was disappointed when my previous fight fell through, but in this sport when one door shuts, another one opens. This setback has brought me back to where I need to be, and I’m here to put the entire 147 [lb] division on notice,” said Conor Benn recently.

In a long interview with DAZN published this week, Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Authority for Entertainment in Saudi Arabia, issued a generous invitation to boxers Devin Haney, the WBC 140-pound titlist, and Gervonta Davis to fight on a card sometime later this year in the oil-producing nation. Presumably, Alalshikh would also want to see the two fighters take on each other as well.

“I want him (Davis) and I send message now from you to [Davis’ advisor Al] Haymon: ‘Let’s do job [together], brother,’” Alalshikh said. “But Haney I want to see in my country and I send message from you now to him. I will try to do it in 2024. And Davis of course we want him in our country.”

Thanks to Alalshikh and his ability to dip into Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth, boxing has seen numerous high-profile fights made in the past few months, including the stacked heavyweight-laden card on Dec. 23 that featured Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder in separate fights. The country will notably host the undisputed heavyweight championship between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Uysk on Feb. 17, followed by a “crossover” bout between Joshua and former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in March.

Gervonta Davis

Alalshikh has been bullish about his commitment to boxing, saying recently that he wants to actively bring about the sorts of fights that have long been considered impossible because of business politics. One example: the undisputed light heavyweight championship between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

Haney is a free agent whose last fight took place under Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, while Davis has long been backed by Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champion.

Both Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) and Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) are relatively recent converts to Islam. Alalshikh has spoken fondly of Muslim boxers, such as Beterbiev.

Two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter has responded to Gervonta Davis’ claims of ‘getting his a** kicked’ during a sparring session before a world title challenge against Terence Crawford.

Porter retired from the sport following defeat to Crawford in 2021 and since then he has found himself flourishing in the world of boxing media with his own podcast ‘The Porter Way’.

However, in one of the latest episodes of the show, Porter sat down with Bill Haney, father and trainer of Davis’ rival Devin Haney, and Porter shared his belief that ‘Tank’ Davis doesn’t want to fight his fellow unbeaten American.

On social media, Davis responded to Porter’s statement, questioning why he would be afraid of a super-lightweight when he ‘beat Porter’s a** in sparring’ whilst he was a welterweight.

Porter was quick to reply to ‘Tank’, defending his comments and doubling down on the fact that the fight will not happen anytime soon.

For now it seems that Haney’s next opponent will be WBC mandatory challenger Sandor Martin, after talks of a fight between Haney and Ryan Garcia collapsed.

Gervonta Davis has begun training for a return to the ring, which is expected to be on a Prime Video Pay Per View in the spring.

As the Premier Boxing Champions star hits the gym, plenty of potential opponents are being thrown around on social media and beyond.

One of those is Devin Haney, who still doesn’t have a dance partner for his first WBC super lightweight title defense. Sandor Martin is the number one contender, but having just signed to Top Rank, there’s scope for the Spaniard to wait a few months.

This allows Davis and Haney to provide the fans with one of the most significant events of 2024. Two top ten pound-for-pound boxers are facing off in a battle to rival Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence.

However, following a December spat, nothing seems to move between the pair. Haney and his father, Bill, continue to state that Davis is uninterested in the fight.

Gervonta Davis’ can’t leave his house’

Haney even goaded Davis by saying, “He can’t leave his house,” about a prison sentence handed down to “Tank” last year.

Davis accused the judge who allowed his early release of attempting to stop his career in its tracks. He says they won’t allow him to leave the confines of his home or the state.

The Davis vs Haney encounter seems to be as far away as ever, with Haney believing he’s made all the genuine attempts to get the fight over the line.

“I’ve been calling that dude out for years,” said Haney. “He only says something when I got a fight. But now I don’t, and we can fight now wherever he chooses!

“He said we don’t know how to get in contact with him. Well, have your people reach out, Gervonta.”

Haney vs Broner

The Haneys aren’t short of offers, though. Adrien Broner was the latest to throw his hat into the ring.

“He can’t punch himself out a wet paper bag,” said Broner. “Stop all that cap. Hey, Bill Haney, you talked to my people, and we’re ready; where’s the offer?”

Bill responded: “Don’t worry about it, AB. We are going to take it over from here. It’s the Devin Haney era. And you knew that we were going to pull up.

“It’s business, it’s not personal. Get back to doing what you are doing, brother, and Devin is doing what he’s doing: representing this to the fullest.”

Sean Gibbons, who runs Manny Pacquiao’s promotional company, believes the Filipino superstar would be very interested in a showdown with unbeaten puncher Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Pacquiao, 45-years-old, retired from the sport in 2021 after suffering a twelve round decision loss at the hands of then welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas.

Gibbons explains that the sporting authority in Saudi Arabia is very interested in having Pacquiao fight in the country – with the contest being the final fight of his career.

The industry veteran views ‘Tank’ as a great opponent for his boxer.

“Manny and Gervonta Davis match up really well and that would be a fun fight. It’s a matter of being able to make the fight and that’s the difficult part. To close out his career in Saudi, it makes so much sense because they love him in that area so we will keep focusing on that first and we will see what comes up,” Gibbons said.

While Pacquiao retired a few years ago, he’s been taking part in exhibition fights. He’s willing to entertain the idea of a sanctioned fight for the right opportunity.

“Manny has said this before, age is a number. He is still operating at the highest level of the sport and beginning camp this week in his hometown ahead of preparing for the April 20th exhibition fight in Thailand,” Gibbons said.

Gervonrta Davis

“I see this as the perfect springboard into doing something in June or July if that’s in Saudi Arabia, the United States or England, Manny has one last year of fighting before he looks at returning to politics. Manny could do an exhibition with anyone until he is 100. He is built differently and has a fountain of youth, and we hope in the summer time we can do something big.

“Saudi Arabia would be a great place to end his career and he has always wanted to fight in the Middle East. I hope it works out, we are having discussions and Manny is talking to his Excellency Turki Alalshikh. Conor McGregor has said he is fighting in the UFC in June so there’s nothing happening at all there, but it can be revisited alongside Floyd Mayweather. They are fights he could do at 100 years old, off the couch with ease.”

Devin Haney and Gervonta “Tank” Davis are headstrong and considered the best of the best. While the two no longer compete in the same weight class, they’ve continued to argue loudly. Although it’s been entertaining, fans are at the point where they simply want to see them get it on.

Bernard Hopkins is also tired of the theatrics and hopes that they swap fists in the ring. In terms of picking a winner, many are split right down the middle. Hopkins though, wouldn’t dive into details when regarding who he would choose. However, as for who’s the better overall fighter, he believes the answer is obvious.

“Tank,” Hopkins told Sean Zittel of FightHype.com.

Davis, of course, had a busy first half of 2023. He wrapped his year by grabbing two knockout victories over both Hector Luis Garcia and Ryan Garcia. Haney, similarly, made two appearances as well.

In his first fight of 2023, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) eked out a controversial win over Vasiliy Lomachenko. Although fans and Lomachenko banged on the door for a rematch, Haney opted to move up in weight.

Gervonta tank davisAgainst Regis Prograis, Haney cruised, scoring a knockdown in the third before winning every round according to all three judges sitting ringside. Still, even with another world title in a second weight class, Hopkins isn’t convinced that Haney is the better fighter.

For Hopkins, it isn’t about using an eye test. Both fighters are incredibly talented from his point of view, so he uses a more tangible metric to make his judgement.

“He beat the better opposition,” continued Hopkins. “The people that Tank beat, I think, no, I know it overrides who Haney beat. Both of those guys beat good, quality guys but I think Tank got the overwhelming resume that shows that he fought the more talented fighters.”

Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney are the latest names to be targeted for fights in Saudi Arabia in the near future.

Less than six months after entering the sport, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh (chairman of Saudi’s General Entertainment Authority – GEA) has made a serious impact.

The first two shows backed by the GEA have seen Tyson Fury, Francis Ngannou, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder all travel to fight in Riyadh, supported by several other top names from the sport.

Fury will now fight Oleksandr Usyk there on February 17, and this will be followed shortly afterwards by AJ vs Ngannou on March 8.

And the plans don’t stop there as Alalshikh has made it clear that he wants to stage Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol in June.

Now, in an interview with DAZN, he has spoken in depth about his plans and revealed that Davis and Haney are two names he wants to bring to Saudi.

“I want him [Davis] and I send message now to Al Haymon [Davis’ advisor] – let’s do the job brother,” Alalshikh said.

Gervonta Davis

“I want to see Haney in my country and I send message now to him. I will try to do it in 2024.”

Asked if he would like to match them against one another, Alalshikh indeed gave a nod of approval.

However, he is not the first person to stage big-time boxing in Saudi Arabia.

Previously, Skill Challenge Entertainment hosted fights such as the Joshua vs Andy Ruiz rematch and the Joshua vs Usyk rematch in the country.

They also staged Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury in Diriyah last year.

There won’t be any further such YouTuber boxing events moving forwards though, as Alalshikh is adamant that he’s a boxing purist.

“Please, we don’t want any YouTuber fights again,” he insited.

“I want fighters, this is what I support. For me, inside my heart, I want the fighters.”

There might not be a fight in sight for Gervonta Davis yet, but he keeps his fans entertained. Today, the Baltimore native turned to social media, sharing a bunch of life updates with his devoted fans. Of late, ‘Tank’ has been engrossed in a social media scrap with his fellow undefeated boxer Devin Haney regarding a potential fight between them.

After refusing $20 million last year, the Saudis have offered a lucrative opportunity for Davis and Haney to get in the ring and put an end to the debate of who is the best. However, the stars don’t seem to be aligned the right way, as nothing has come out of it yet. Resulting in ‘Tank’ receiving hate from the community, so the 29-year-old had something to say through his Instagram post.

Gervonta Davis: “I cannot be sitting ‘round stressed”

Among everything else, Davis’ post included a picture of himself in the gym, sitting by the wall, boxing gloves on, talking to someone outside the frame. A right swipe away, ‘Tank’ had a message for his haters. He wrote, “I come out on top and escape s**t. I cannot be sitting ’round stressed. Even when I’m down, I know how to play it.”

A couple of swipes more, and there’s an intense clip of Davis hitting the pads at supersonic speeds. Keep swiping – there’s a unique Cartier watch and more swipes, a tweet from Glory Boy that read, “These ni**as is too C**k sucker.” Davis’ posts have always needed a cipher to decipher, but that did not stop his fans from expressing their excitement through the comment section.

Fans demand to know the fight date

Gervonta Davis

The responses to the post ranged from questions about his return to the ring to comparisons with Devin Haney. One user demanded Davis to announce his next fight. “Announce your next f**ken fight already,” wrote the user. While a fight with Haney is possible, no one is sure if Davis would take up a difficult fight after being out of the ring for eight months at this point.

Another user questioned Davis about an ankle monitor. The user wrote, “Ankle monitor?” Davis is currently serving his prohibition, stemming from a guilty plea regarding his November 2020 car crash that injured four people.

Someone else revealed they were looking for a fight date, swiping through the images Davis shared. “Me swiping through the thread fast af thinking it’s a date in there somewhere,” wrote the user. There obviously wasn’t a date in there, resulting in more wait for the fan

The next user asserted Davis vs. Haney is a fan-favorite fight, urging Davis to make the fight happen. The user’s comment read, “You and Devin, a real fight, fan favorite, make it happen, tank.” As per Davis’ actions of late, that fight might not happen very soon.

One devoted fan boldly declared Davis was better than Devin Haney. “Better than devin haney,” wrote the user.

After Davis expressed his thoughts and emotions through the Instagram post, some fans were left excited while others – not so much. What did you think of the post?

Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis are probably the biggest names in the current sport of boxing. The rivalry between the two has been going on for a long time now. Last year it seemed like the two would end up facing one another as the talks between them started heating up after Haney’s victory over Regis Prograis. So how come the two didn’t manage to secure the fight?

Ultimately the fight ended up getting scrapped and Haney moved to Ryan Garcia after getting no indication from Davis of the fight moving forward. Bill Haney claimed that Davis had turned down a $20 million offer for the fight. This caused a lot of fans to blame Tank for ducking Haney. However, it seems that Davis has found a way to prove that he is not afraid of Haney. Here’s what he claimed as he brought up his sparring session with the former world champion, Shawn Porter.

Gervonta Davis uses Shawn Porter to prove his ability

Shawn Porter appeared to be full of praises for Tank as he shared his rationale during the session. Porter claimed that he was more focused on assessing if Davis lived up to his reputation or not. He acknowledged that “Tank is the real deal”, though he chalked his performance up to him focusing more on analyzing Tank and it seems that Davis wasn’t too happy with his comments.

Here’s what Davis wrote as he took to Twitter, “Now, ask Shawn this question. if I beat his a** in the gym and he was over 147lbs… why tf would I be scared to fight a *f w just a nose… sh*t not adding up!”. Through this statement, Davis is conveying that he doesn’t fear opponents in higher weight classes thus claiming that he is not afraid to face Haney. Interestingly, Haney has another contender looking for a potential bout.

Adrien Broner calls out Bill Haney

Gervonrta Davis

In a recent exchange of words, Bill Haney, father and manager of rising boxing star Devin Haney, expressed a desire for high-profile fights for his son. However, the unexpected counterpunch came from Adrien Broner, known for his boldness, who took the battle to Instagram. Broner’s post featured a visual comparison of their boxing records, emphasizing his own impressive 35-4-0, with 24 KOs, against Haney’s undefeated 31-0-0 record, with only 15 KOs.

In a confrontational caption, Broner challenged Bill Haney. He wrote, “Ah @billhaney__ if you wanna get your son @realdevinhaney f**ked up send the contract I ain’t never ran from no man in boxing why would I run from your son he can’t punch himself out a wet paper bag stop all that cap cause I’m with the sh*t and I want all the smoke show me the dotted line!!!!!”.

This unexpected twist unveils a deeper game at play. Beyond the fight negotiations, it brings attention to the narrative building around the potential bout. Will Broner end up fighting Haney next? Only time will tell. In the meantime do share your thoughts about the situation in the comments below.
