Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has made his prediction as to when Anthony Joshua will be able to do what Tyson Fury couldn’t and stop former UFC sensation Francis Ngannou.

The Cameroonian almost pulled off the upset of the century when he lost a split-decision to ‘The Gypsy King’ after knocking the Brit down in the third-round.

That fight appears to have opened the door for ‘The Predator’ to continue in major boxing fights in 2024, so much so that Joshua has delayed a potential world title shot against Filip Hrgovic in order to face him.

‘AJ’ emphatically dominated and knocked out Otto Wallin last month, another opponent of Fury’s who took him the distance, and Joshua will seek to do a similar job on Ngannou, as he pursues a shot at the undisputed heavyweight title.

In an interview with Matchroom Boxing, Hearn declared that he expects the fight to last no longer than eight rounds, as he continued to show respect for Joshua’s opponent, despite criticism of the fighter from high-profile figures in the sport.

The card will take place on Friday March 8th in Riyadh, topping yet another stellar Saudi bill that features a mouth-watering affair between Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker, as well as a WBC featherweight world title showdown between Rey Vargas and Nick Ball.

Gervonta Davis leaked a direct message from promoter Eddie Hearn before calling out Bill Haney and Devin Haney on Friday night.

Boxing fans are desperate to see lightweight contender Davis vs former undisputed champion Devin Haney.

The rivalry between the two fighters has ramped up following Haney’s victory over Regis Prograis last weekend, which sealed the WBC lightweight crown.

However, Davis took issue with Haney rehydrating to 165lbs to win a 140lbs title on the day of the fight.

It is understood Haney’s refusal to entertain a catchweight and rehydration clause for a fight with Davis is causing problems.

On Friday, Davis released a screenshot of a direct message from promoter Hearn on social media, which read: “Let’s talk!”

The American boxer simply replied: “No.”

‘Tank’ then went live on Instagram to explain his actions, calling out Haney and his father Bill in the process.

Davis said: “If they wanna make the fight happen, tell them they know who to call. They’re broke. I’m supposed to get on the phone with Al [Haymon] tonight to talk to him about what these n***** are talking about.

“You see, Eddie [Hearn] has been in my DMs. No, I want your boss. If they want to make the fight happen, they know who to call, and I’m by the phone. All of them.”

Bill Haney then went live on Instagram to give his own version of events, claiming Davis rejected a guaranteed $20million to fight his son.

“I’m talking to you, the ex-face of boxing. This is the Devin Haney era,” said Bill Haney on Instagram.

““Bro, you turned down $20m guaranteed. $20m, bro. Are you serious, bro?”

Anthony Joshua’s longtime promoter claims to have had plenty of interest in booking Joshua against Francis Ngannou after the former UFC heavyweight champion nearly defeated Tyson Fury in his professional boxing debut.

Unfortunately, according to Matchroom Sport headman Eddie Hearn, that interest went unrequited.

“I reached out to Francis Ngannou’s team and I said, ‘Just to let you know, we’re up for discussing the Francis Ngannou [vs.] AJ fight. I never heard back from them,” Hearn said Monday on The MMA Hour. “So I think probably, knowing the business, I would say that probably Fury-Ngannou is almost probably agreed to post Fury-[Oleksandr] Usyk already.

“[Ngannou will] feel like, after that first fight, he can beat Fury, but there’s no point [in boxing non-stars] — he can really lose to anybody in the top 50 at heavyweight, so you’ve got to cash in at this point, and there’s really only three fights that cash into the levels that he will want [Fury, Joshua, or Deontay Wilder]. So I’d guess, and you might know better, Francis Ngannou will fight in the PFL or wherever in spring, summer of 2024, and then he’ll fight Tyson Fury at the end of [2024]. I would think that would be the mindset of the team.”

“I think everyone knows it’s a two-fight deal with Fury-Usyk,” Hearn added, “and I would think that there’s probably one on the back end as well to rematch Ngannou.”

Ngannou, 37, nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in combat sports history this past October when he fought to a controversial split decision against Fury. Despite being a sizable betting underdog, Ngannou pushed Fury to his limits and even knocked down boxing’s lineal heavyweight champion in a performance that blew away the expectations of many and left boxing lifers such as Hearn and Carl Frampton singing his praises. Immediately following the bout, Hearn publicly lobbied for Joshua vs. Ngannou to be next, stating that he believed the matchup could be “one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport,” especially if it was held in in Africa, where both fighters have roots.

However, the fight never came together. Joshua instead signed to face Otto Wallin on the Day of Reckoning card in Saudi Arabia on Dec. 23., an event that features another of Ngannou’s potential opponents — Deontay Wilder — in a co-headlining bout against Joseph Parker. If Joshua and Wilder both emerge victorious, Hearn reiterated his hope on Monday that the long-awaited clash between Joshua and Wilder could be the next step.

Ngannou’s next move remains uncertain, however Fury is set to face WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk in a much-anticipated title unification bout on Feb. 17.

While much of shine on Fury has been washed away since his lackluster showing against Ngannou, Hearn still favors boxing’s lineal king to handles his business against Usyk.

“I really believed he was quite a strong favorite pre-Ngannou,” Hearn said of Fury. “We don’t really know physically where he’s at. I mean, he’s lucky that Usyk’s not a puncher, he’s lucky Usyk’s a much smaller man. Because I think against a bigger guy, against a puncher, against a guy that can wrestle him on the inside, I think his confidence really wouldn’t be there in a fight like that. So I do think Fury will win the fight, but you certainly can’t rule out Usyk, and we just don’t know where he’s at physically or mentally after a fight like that [Ngannou performance]. He didn’t look himself in that fight, but perhaps he was just ill prepared.”

Eddie Hearn, believes that the Biritish-Nigerian will have his first bout of 2024 against Deontay Wilder as long as they both win their respective fights on December 23.

Joshua will headline against Otto Wallin two days before Christmas in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Wilder will take on Joseph Parker on the same card. Should both Joshua and Wilder win their respective fights, it would set up one of the most exciting heavyweight matchups in the sport.

Head of Matchroom Sport, Hearn, had previously suggested that his client could explore a potential vacant IBF title shot against top-rated Filip Hrgovic of Croatia.

The IBF belt is currently held by unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, who also holds the WBO and WBA belts and the Ukrainian will put his three belts on the line against WBC champion Tyson Fury on February 17 in Riyadh.

Hearn believes that if an undisputed champion is crowned in the fight, the belts are likely to be seperated again because of the mandatory demands of the sanctioning bodies, especially that of the IBF.

In that scenario, Joshua facing off against Hrgovic for the IBF title could be appealing as it would afford the 34-year-old the chance to become a three-time heavyweight champion.

However, now Hearn feels that there would be too much momentum for Joshua vs Wilder in that time frame to consider any other options.

“It’s very likely that after Fury vs Usyk 1, the belts will fragment, particularly the IBF. If that fragments and Joshua beats Wallin on Dec. 23rd, it would be Hrgovic against Joshua. But by then it’s very likely that Joshua vs Wilder could be contracted and probably will be contracted,” Hearn told Boxing Social.

“We won’t be able to U-turn at that point. We’re full steam ahead trying to make the Wilder fight. WBC final eliminator? If that’s what it’s called. I would just call it the biggest fight in boxing at that point. When that fight happens and the only way that fight happens is if they both win on December 23rd on the same card. And if they do win on the same card, on the same night, that fight is the biggest fight in boxing.”

The Gypsy King looked a shell of his former self in his clash with former UFC star Ngannou

Fury, 35, was dropped by the former UFC heavyweight champion in the third round of their Riyadh Rumble, in which he looked devoid of ideas.

The Morecambe warrior will look to become the undisputed king of the heavyweights against Oleksandr Usyk in February following his horror show against Ngannou.

And Hearn reckons Fury will enter the unification fight somewhat of a shell of the fighter he was when he was his peak.

He told Boxing Social: “I think Tyson Fury, Look, there are a lot of signs that he might be in decline after the Ngannou fight.

That being said, Hearn believes Fury will be too much for former undisputed cruiserweight king Usyk too handle if he takes the fight seriously.

He continued: “But if he is back to his best, if he is firing on all cylinders, I do expect him to win that fight.”

Hearn’s latest prediction for the fight is in stark contrast to initial assessment of the dust-up.

He said: “Usyk is a special breed, we’ve [Anthony Joshua] had two cracks at him.

“Usyk-Fury is a mismatch, no one wants to see it.”

Hearn’s concerns about Fury’s recent displays are also shared by the WBC heavyweight king’s dad John.

He said: “The 17th February is the date they have got to work towards.

“But in my opinion, Tyson needs a bit more time to get his conditioning right and his weight right.

“For me, it looked like he had lost 20lbs of muscle last time. Something was wrong.

“For my money, his last three fights, I have seen a bit of decline. Not a decline in ability but a decline in strength, power and physical condition.

“I don’t know what they are doing up there, you have to address it. He didn’t look himself out in Saudi.

“He didn’t look right, everything had changed about him, his demeanour, his body. I was puzzled.

“He said he had been training but there is training and there is training.

“If you’re going at your own pace no one is going to tell you otherwise, no one is going to offend you or kick you up the backside.

“No one can teach Tyson how to box, or teach him more than he knows. All they can do is put some muscle on there and make his body rock solid.

“For my money he looked fat-thin, he should have been better, a bit heavier with a lot more muscle.

“Tyson is a mammoth fella. He needs to power up in the body department and the only way you do that is a proper course and they take time and we don’t have the time.”
