Matchroom Boxing is back in force this weekend. After hosting Katie Taylor’s instant classic victory over Chantelle Cameron in Dublin last weekend, Eddie Hearn’s promotional outfit moves up to Belfast this Saturday night. Local hero Michael Conlan meets Jordan Gill in a must-win main event for both fighters.

The Sportsman spoke with Eddie via Matchroom to get the lowdown on Taylor’s win, the Belfast card, the heavyweight mega-show featuring Anthony Joshua and how Matchroom’s 2024 is looking.

Katie Taylor’s victory over Chantelle Cameron last weekend

An epic event, epic fight, epic occasion. The atmosphere, the momen;t it’s going to be looked back on for a long time to come. I think the biggest moment of her career so far. Chantelle was excellent. It was an excellent fight. Katie performed out of her skin really, as the underdog, to get a deserved victory. Massive night for Irish boxing. When you look at the 5-050 fights if you’d like Gary Cully, Paddy Donovan, and of course Katie Taylor, the Irish came through. Which was very different to earlier this year. So a big big night for Irish boxing.

Taylor fighting at Croke Park in Dublin

Anthony and Deontay

Talks are ongoing. I believe there’s some even today. There’s different arenas and stadiums that we can look to. But obviously, Croke Park has always been the dream for Katie. We’ll have to see how feasible that is. We’ve just got to plan out a schedule for 2024. Will there be a fight before Croke Park? Will we wait for spring or summer particularly in Croke Park? Do we go to the Aviva? There’s loads of different things to look at. And obviously, who will the opponent be? But we’re only few days after the fight, let the excitement settle and let the head settle. Then start planning for the future.

Matchroom in 2024

We’ve been pretty good at mapping out that schedule, sort of three, four months in advance for fight fans. That’s really what we want to try and do. So as we move into December, we want to get that schedule up and running as soon as possible. Certainly for Day of Reckoning fight week at the latest really But all of the work now is obviously (to) finish a tremendous run to the end of the year but also start planning for some big nights in the new year.

Anthony Joshua in camp with Ben Davison ahead of the Otto Wallin fight

I’m catching up with him tomorrow. (He’s) been quite quiet, just working away, happy there Knows what he needs to do against Otto Wallin and it’s a very tough fight. Short notice, but confident and excited to see him perform in December.

Eddie Hearn, believes that the Biritish-Nigerian will have his first bout of 2024 against Deontay Wilder as long as they both win their respective fights on December 23.

Joshua will headline against Otto Wallin two days before Christmas in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Wilder will take on Joseph Parker on the same card. Should both Joshua and Wilder win their respective fights, it would set up one of the most exciting heavyweight matchups in the sport.

Head of Matchroom Sport, Hearn, had previously suggested that his client could explore a potential vacant IBF title shot against top-rated Filip Hrgovic of Croatia.

The IBF belt is currently held by unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, who also holds the WBO and WBA belts and the Ukrainian will put his three belts on the line against WBC champion Tyson Fury on February 17 in Riyadh.

Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder
Hearn believes that if an undisputed champion is crowned in the fight, the belts are likely to be seperated again because of the mandatory demands of the sanctioning bodies, especially that of the IBF.

In that scenario, Joshua facing off against Hrgovic for the IBF title could be appealing as it would afford the 34-year-old the chance to become a three-time heavyweight champion.

However, now Hearn feels that there would be too much momentum for Joshua vs Wilder in that time frame to consider any other options.

“It’s very likely that after Fury vs Usyk 1, the belts will fragment, particularly the IBF. If that fragments and Joshua beats Wallin on Dec. 23rd, it would be Hrgovic against Joshua. But by then it’s very likely that Joshua vs Wilder could be contracted and probably will be contracted,” Hearn told Boxing Social.

“We won’t be able to U-turn at that point. We’re full steam ahead trying to make the Wilder fight. WBC final eliminator? If that’s what it’s called. I would just call it the biggest fight in boxing at that point. When that fight happens and the only way that fight happens is if they both win on December 23rd on the same card. And if they do win on the same card, on the same night, that fight is the biggest fight in boxing.”

fights JosepJoshua fights for the third time this year on December 23 as he takes on Otto Wallin in Saudi Arabia whilst Deontay Wilderh Parker at the same event

Anthony Joshua will look to set up a highly-anticipated clash against Deontay Wilder when he fights Otto Wallin on December 23.

Former two-time heavyweight world champion Joshua is back in the ring for the third time this year after beating Jermaine Franklin in April and Robert Helenius in August. ‘AJ’ looked set to return in the first quarter of 2024 but a short-notice fight with Wallin was agreed upon for a blockbuster card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event will also feature the return of Wilder, who hasn’t fought since knocking out Helenius in a round last October. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ will need to get past Joseph Parker to keep up his side of the deal for a fight with Joshua. the likes of Daniel Dubois and Dmitry Bivol are also in action, so here’s all you need to know about the big event…

Joshua: “People taken about I’ve peaked have never even seen what a peak looks like in their careers. I look forward to delivering my message to Wallin on December 23. I know where I want to go and I know what I want to do. I believe I’m going to be three-time heavyweight champion of the world.”

Wallin: “My manager and I spoke about this fight and we thought it made sense. We came to a conclusion in about two days, I’m coming into this fight after a great win against Gassiev. I’m in a great position and I’m on top of the world, I’ve been waiting for this fight for a long time.”

Jospeh Parker looks to announce himself on the big stage once again when he faces American knockout artist, Deontay Wilder.

The heavyweight from New Zealand won the vacant WBO World Title against Andy Ruiz Jr back in 2016 and would defend it twice before losing to Anthony Joshua.

He has since fallen short against both Dillian Whyte and Joe Joyce, but built up three wins this year to set him up for Wilder.

What Wilder has over Parker in power, he absolutely lacks in activity. The man from Alabama has fought just once in the last two years, and that lasted all of one round.

Despite the potential ring rust, former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch believes that Wilder will add a 43rd knockout to his record.

Heavyweights were in talks previously before Ngannou instead chose to fight Tyson Fury

DEONTAY WILDER is in “ongoing” talks to fight Francis Ngannou – and the pair could collide in a never-seen-before set of rules.

Ngannou walked out on the UFC to sign with rivals the Professional Fighters League, who gave him the green light to also pursue boxing.

The Cameroonian was in negotiations to fight Wilder but he instead agreed a deal with Tyson Fury for a crossover clash in Saudi Arabia.

Ngannou, 37, amazingly dropped Fury, 35, but was controversially beaten by split-decision on the scorecards.

The ex-UFC champion now wants to wait for a rematch after Fury’s undisputed showdown with Oleksandr Usyk, 36, on February 17.

So it paves the way for Ngannou to make a return to MMA in his next fight, also marking his debut in the PFL.

PFL CEO Peter Murray has named Wilder as a potential opponent and confirmed talks will continue with the American boxer.

Murray said: “Absolutely, ongoing. I’m going to see Deontay next week and we want the four-ounce gloves on him with Francis in the cage.”

Wilder has in the past called for a two-fight deal with Ngannou, to meet in the ring and cage.

But Murray has teased that a mixed-rules bout could be agreed in a bid to level up the playing field, a hybrid never before seen.

He said: “We’re working through those details.

“I mean it’s a fight that Francis wants, it’s a fight we believe Deontay wants and we’re focussed on putting it together.”

Wilder, 38, first returns on December 23 in Saudi Arabia against New Zealander Joseph Parker, 31.

Anthony Joshua, 34, is also in action that night against Otto Wallin, 32, in the hopes of building towards a blockbuster with Wilder next year.

But Murray still believes Ngannou could face Wilder in his next bout despite the mega-money boxing moves.

He said: “I think as relates to the next fight, yeah a Wilder is much more likely. That is our goal.”

Joseph Parker faces Deontay Wilder on a big heavyweight bill in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on December 23, which also features Britain’s Anthony Joshua against Otto Wallin and a crop of contenders from the top division

Joseph Parker has the superior speed and boxing skills needed to deliver a stunning knockout win over Deontay Wilder, says his promoter David Higgins.

The New Zealander has been confirmed as the next opponent for Wilder on a big heavyweight bill in Saudi Arabia, which also features Anthony Joshua vs Otto Wallin on December 23.

Wilder has earned a reputation as the most destructive puncher in the top division, but Higgins insists that Parker is capable of delivering a sensational win following last month’s ruthless stoppage of Simon Kean.

“It was a fantastic performance by Joseph Parker,” Higgins told Sky Sports.

“He showed he was explosive and showed great power. Simon Kean was a big guy and Joseph knocked him out with an uppercut. It was his third victory this calendar year and Deontay Wilder will be the fourth. We like the momentum that Joseph has heading into this massive opportunity in Saudi Arabia.

“Any heavyweight can knock out a heavyweight. Joseph has got over 20 knockouts on his resume. Wilder has got a huge punch, one of the biggest in history, but Joseph does have some advantages. He is the better boxer, he’s quicker. It’s naive to write anyone off.

“Joseph was a world champion, so was Wilder. Wilder may have a massive punch, but outside of that, he’s not as well developed as Joseph. It’s a winnable fight for Joseph Parker, if he brings his A-game and we see the best Joseph Parker on the night.”

“Yeah I do [believe Parker can stop Parker]. He put Chisora down a few times with the uppercut. It’s all about connecting with a well-timed punch. Of course he can knock out Deontay Wilder.”

Parker’s reign as the WBO champion was ended by a points loss to Joshua in 2018, but the 31-year-old remains eager to face the British star again in a rematch.

“Victory will catapult him right up back to the top of the conversation,” said Higgins.

“He could credibly ask for a rematch with Anthony Joshua for example, but also challenge for a world title in 2024.”

Tyson Fury’s exceptional win over Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight has gone down as one of the greatest heavyweight battles of all time.

In the aftermath, broadcaster BT Sport released special footage – including audio – from the corners of both men during the contest, which Fury won via knockout in round 11.

After the opening six minutes of the trilogy bout, the talk from both corners was largely tactical.

In round three though, Fury floored Wilder and this prompted a strong response from the American’s trainer Malik Scott.

Scott told his fighter: “He’s still looking for your jab. Block it with your hand and check it with a hook.”

In the fourth, Wilder turned the fight on its head as he put Fury down twice, and this provoked a different reaction in his corner.

Deontay and Tyson

Scott shouted: “Look at me, it’s time to be very calm and surgical now.”

However, Scott’s advice did not see Wilder score a knockout and instead it was Fury who took control from the fifth onwards.

His coach, SugarHill Steward, bellowed: “You’ve got to just go ahead and do it now. Look at him, he gave it his best shot.”

SugarHill ranted after round seven: “Put your hand out here and guide it, it’s not that hard. Red light, green light.

“Finish this s*** now with your jabs. I’m telling you only one thing – jab. Let the jab go to work.

“Jab the motherf***er man. Just jab the motherf***er goddamnit.

“The simplest s*** in the book.”

When the finish did finally come in round 11, SugarHill jumped in to celebrate with Fury and shouted: “Like the big dogs do!”

It concluded a memorable trilogy, while Ring Magazine voted it ‘Fight of the Year’ in their 2021 awards.

Pair will fight on the same card in December and could eventually face each other next year

EDDIE HEARN has revealed why Anthony Joshua’s £40million mega-fight with Deontay Wilder collapsed.

The duo will be fighting in Saudi Arabia on December 23 – but not against each other.

The date was initially set aside for Tyson Fury to take on Oleksandr Usyk in a heavyweight title unifier.

But with the two champions now sparring in February, boxing fans were hopeful of seeing AJ and Wilder finally putting their feud to rest.

Unfortunately for punters, the rivals failed to agree a deal.

And Joshua will now fight Otto Wallin, while Wilder is taking on Joseph Parker.

The two men could eventually meet next year provided they win their respective Christmas clashes.

But American fighter Wilder said this week he was holding out little hope for an eventual battle, having failed to secure a £40m clash with Joshua several years ago.

He said: “It’s his management that have held him back from fighting me because, you know, he’s a fighter.

Anthony joshua and Deontay

“It’s been over six years. But there comes a point in time were you’re like ‘forget it’.

“Many times he wanted to fight, he wanted to accept it but his handlers didn’t want it because Joshua is the money-maker for the company. And if he goes down, so does the business.”

Joshua’s promoter Hearn has now confirmed that Wilder did make a £40m proposal “three or four years ago.”

However, an official contract was not sent through afterwards, resulting in the fight collapsing.

Hearn told the Mail: “To be honest with you, that was about three, four years ago. No one came to us with an offer. We received an email.

“I mean, me and Deontay are friends so I don’t to be hard, but we received an email from a Hotmail address saying ‘we will give you 50 million dollars for the fight.

“It was sent to Anthony Joshua directly, he was like ‘what?’ I went back and said ‘send the contract’.

“They went ‘no, you need to agree terms before we send the contract’. I said ‘you don’t agree terms before sending the contract’.

“I didn’t know what the contract looks like at this point. I’m not going to put myself in a position and say ‘yes I agree terms’ and then receive a contract that is just rubbish and you can’t sign it.

“But they never sent it. There’s a lot of reasons why that fight didn’t happen but we have to look to the future.

“We have a big chance of getting the fight but it’s all irrelevant if they don’t win on December 23.”
