Charlie Woods is not your average teenager. He couldn’t be, even if he wanted to. Unless he plans to move into some Mediterranean country house or settle down in some Icelandic village, the teenager will face media attention and public scrutiny in every aspect of his life, personal and professional. It’s truly a matter of wonder that the teenager still manages to prioritize his midterm after rubbing shoulders with the likes of Justin Thomas, Annika Sorenstam, and John Daly alongside his father.

However, one downside—farcical as it may sound—of having a Tiger Woods, a Jack Nicklaus, or a Gary Player as a father is that GOAT-level expectations are placed on your shoulders when those are not broad enough to carry their legacy. Unfortunately, everything Charlie Woods will ever achieve will be measured against his father’s achievement.

The father-son duo is currently gearing up for their routine annual outing at the PNC Championship this week. Charlie Woods has performed really well so far this year. However, his future success will hinge on how well he can get to grips with the ludicrous pressure that comes with being Tiger Woods’s son.

Woods’s legacy can prove to be a burden

In Tiger Woods’s success story, Earl Woods is the keystone—the fons et origo of the maverick who changed the game of golf. Woods has taken some of the parenting skills from his father and inculcated the value of grinding in his son. Nevertheless, it’s not the same as the relationship between Tiger Woods and Earl Woods. The veteran golfer appears to be more candid with his teenage son. “Charlie is Charlie… Yes, he is my son. But then again, he is his own person.

Woods has courted and rejected the limelight since a young age. The media has thrown the spotlight on his personal life countless times but could never penetrate beyond the drawing room. That much you can expect from a person who names his yacht ‘Privacy.

For Charlie Woods, the case is a little different. The 15-time Major champion was always Tiger Woods, a first from the Woods family. However, for the teenager, first and foremost, he is Tiger Woods’s son, at least until he reaches close to or surpasses his father’s records, which seems well-nigh impossible at this moment. That’s a compliment on the father’s ridiculous achievements rather than a diss on the son’s skills.

Carving out an identity for himself will be hard for the teenager. Even when Woods was a young sensation quickly rising through the ranks, donning green jackets, and drinking from the Claret Jug, he was not subject to such minute scrutiny as Charlie Woods will be on his PGA Tour debut and every shot in his rookie season.

We have examples of wunderkinds buckling under pressure and eventually getting lost in the whirlwind of stardom and fame. But so far, Charlie Woods has weathered it pretty well, and he seems to be reveling in the spotlight.

How has Charlie Woods performed so far?

Charlie Woods officially debuted in front of the world at the 2020 PNC Championship. The 12-year-old kid finished in seventh place with 62 under. The following year, the father-son came all guns blazing as they recorded a second-place finish, just two shots behind Team Daly. The father-son duo fluttered 11 consecutive birdies in the final round to post 57 after shooting 62 in the final round.

That year was significant for Charlie Woods personally as well. He netted five top-10 finishes from his six starts in the boys 11–13 category at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. However, it was 2022 when the teenage Woods finally spread his wings. The 13-year-old appeared in four tournaments at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, bagging a top-10 finish in each of them with two titles and a runner-up finish to his name.

The 13-year-old’s whistle-stop growth didn’t elude the keen eyes of Tiger Woods. Lest the teenager become complacent, Woods threw him into the thick of it all at the Junior PGA South Florida Tour. In the 13-18 boys category, the youngster had two top-25 finishes to show for himself from four outings.

Tiger Woods’s son is at the start of what could be a promising career, but how have his results been so far?

With a dad who can make a serious case for being the greatest player of all time, it’s not surprising that Charlie Woods has been making headlines since beginning to follow in Tiger’s footsteps with a burgeoning golf career of his own.

But how do his results stack up, and is the hype the 14-year-old is generating merited?

Charlie’s ability first caught the attention of the public when he was aged just 11 at a local junior event in Florida. In it, he shot a three under 33 over nine holes to win by five shots. Not bad considering that, just two years earlier, his dad had explained that he and his sister Sam were more interested in soccer.

Since bursting onto the scene at that young age, Charlie has had considerably more success on the course. Later in 2020, he appeared alongside Tiger at the PNC Championship for the first time, and they performed admirably, finishing seventh after shooting a pair of 62s.

The year after, it got even better as, despite Tiger’s long layoff after injuring his right leg in a car accident, the pair finished second at the tournament, two shots behind John Daly and John Daly II, including a final round 57 that included 11 straight birdies. The pair followed that up in 2022 with a T8 at the event at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.

Between 2021 and 2023, Charlie had already begun making a name for himself in tournaments without his famous dad alongside him, too.

In 2021, he competed on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in the Boys 11-13 category. From his six starts, he achieved finishes of T8, 3rd, 10th, 7th, 8th and 12th.

In 2022, Charlie again played mainly on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour as well as the Junior PGA South Florida Tour, playing eight tournaments overall. In the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, Charlie competed in the Boys 11-13 category again. In his four appearances, he finished 2nd, T1, 10th and 1st, with that win coming in the Major Championship at Village Golf Course.

On the Junior PGA South Florida Tour, he played in the decidedly more challenging Boys 13-18 group, with finishes of 22nd, T40, T23 and T28.

He also finished T4 in the Last Chance Regional for the Notah Begay III Boys’ Jr Golf National Championship. In the tournament, he finished a highly creditable 11th in the Boys 12-13 category among the field of 32.

On the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour in 2023, Charlie moved up to the Boys 14-15 category, and finished T1, 2nd, T9 and 1st from his four tournaments. The latter result was particularly impressive as he cruised to victory by eight shots in the Major Championship at Village Golf Course, his second win at the tournament in a row, albeit in a different age category.

In 2023, on the Junior PGA South Florida Tour, Charlie’s eight tournaments finished T19, T8, 15th, T33, T20, 10th, T35, T5.

He also shot a 66 in the Last Chance Regional to close out victory and qualify for the 2023 Notah Begay III Boys’ Jr Golf National Championship in the Boys 14-15 category, where he finished T17 with Tiger caddying for him every day.

While it’s still early days for Charlie, and talk of him making it in the professional game, or even one day securing a Major win, is premature, as things stand, his results show that he undoubtedly has the potential to go further in the game.

Charlie Woods has accomplished a feat even his legendary father didn’t manage at a high school tournament in Florida.

Tiger provided a surprise fitness update earlier this month after being spotted caddying for Charlie in each round of the Notah Begay Junior Golf National Championship.

The 47-year-old has revealed that the “the pain is completely gone” in his ankle following subtalar fusion surgery in the wake of his withdrawal from April’s Masters.

He did admit he was “pretty sore after caddying for four days” during that event and was not on bag duties this week, instead watching on from the sidelines at the Florida High School State Championship.

Woods Jr finished the event at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Orlando in T26 in the individual standings after rounds of 78 and 76.

But his Benjamin School boys team sealed their fourth title in the FHSAA Class A State Championship, with a clip now going viral of the 14-year-old holing a chip shot and celebrating with a trademark Woods fist-pump on the final day.

Charlie now holds the honour of being a high school state champion, but Tiger never won a similar crown during his time at Western High School as the California Interscholastic Federation did not host the tournament when he was a student.

While Charlie is a Florida High School Athletic Association Class A state champion, Tiger, 47, never had the opportunity to win the state title at Western High School because the California Interscholastic Federation at that time did not hold state championships.

Tiger has been spotted carrying the bag for Charlie on multiple occasions during his latest rehabilitation period.tiger wood and chalie woods

It is unclear yet when he will return to tournament action himself, but there is growing excitement that he could make a return before the year is out, either at the Hero World Challenge or the PNC Championship.

He was seen hitting full shots in October for the first time since his surgery and Stewart Cink claimed his former Ryder Cup teammate was in “go-mode” as he steps up his recovery.

A spot is still remaining in the field for the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas at the end of this month, a tournament which Woods hosts.

However, a return in 2023 appears most likely at the PNC Championship, the team event in Orlando where he has played alongside Charle for the past three years.

The 26th PNC Championship will be held Dec. 16-17 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando (Fla.) at Grande Lakes.

Tiger Woods and his 14-year-old son, Charlie, will highlight the 20-team field, which is for major and Players Championship winners. Each player is partnered with a family member.

That major list also includes PGA Tour Champions winners. Steve Stricker won three of the senior majors this past season and will make his debut in the field alongside his daughter, Izzi, a Wisconsin high school state champion.

The 36-hole tournament employs a scramble format for both rounds. This means each players hit tee shots, and the team selects the better among the two. They then both play from that spot and select the better shot from there.

With Tiger proudly spectating from the crowd, freshman Charlie Woods helped The Benjamin School boys golf team capture its fourth state championship.

At just 14 years old, Tiger Woods’ son Charlie is already one-upping his dad by accomplishing one thing that the elder golf legend never could: winning a high school state championship.

With Tiger proudly spectating from the crowd, freshman Charlie Woods helped The Benjamin School boys golf team capture its fourth state championship in school history earlier this week. Charlie shot a 78 and 76 over the two-day tournament, finishing in a tie for 26th place overall. But it was sophomore Jake Valentine who clinched the title with a birdie putt on hole 17 that he followed with a par on the final hole.

Tiger, who’s already been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, never won a state championship during his time at Western High School in Anaheim, California. But that’s probably because he didn’t have the chance to.

CHALIE WOODS I

At that time, the governing body that oversees high school sports didn’t conduct state golf tournaments. Instead, Tiger went on to become the youngest golfer at the time to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship in 1991, outplaying a field of older competitors when he was just 16 years old. He followed that feat by winning it again in 1992 and 1993, becoming the only golfer in tournament history to win it three times in a row.

While there’s no question that Charlie definitely has golf in his genes, he also has arguably the best coach in the world, and is quickly emerging into a star in the golf community. Since taking up the sport, Charlie and his dad have competed in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 PNC Championships, an annual tournament in which professional golfers team up with family members.

Then in September of this year, Tiger actually caddied for his son as Charlie went on to win the Notah Begay III Junior Golf Last Chance Regional tournament in Florida. In an interview, Charlie said it was “great” to have his father on his bag.

And while it remains unclear what bigger plans the young prodigy may have for the future, one thing is clear, and it’s that this won’t be the last time golf fans hear the name Charlie Woods.

It’s not easy being the son of the world’s most famous golf player. Tiger Woods has symbolized golf to the world for the better part of the last two decades. When you’re his son, fans automatically expect you to not just follow in your father’s footsteps but also measure up to him. ‘Insane’ would perhaps be an understatement to describe the pressure. Even Pete Cowen, the legendary British coach who has trained the likes of Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood, admits that it’s tough being Charlie Woods.

So, will the young golfer be able to overcome the pressure? Can the 14-year-old junior golfer eventually match his father’s legacy? And most importantly, does being Tiger Woods’ son automatically guarantee his success, as a lot of fans speculate? In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports’ Noah Lock, the veteran coach shared his honest thoughts.

Pete Cowen gets honest about Charlie Woods

The young man has got a lot of pressure on him because of his father.” There is no denying it, and Pete Cowen is quick to admit it. Consider this: teenage Woods has been in the spotlight since age 12, when he turned up with his father at the 2020 PNC Championship. His every performance has made headlines, including his win at the junior-level tournament for the school he plays for.

Can he use the pressure as motivation to perform better? Tiger Woods has always been in the spotlight since turning every head at the 1997 Masters. Pressure has never been a hurdle for the 15-time Major winner. Moreover, Charlie Woods is not the first son trying to fill in his legendary father’s shoes. But history has not been so kind to the children.

We keep waiting to find out when Tiger Woods will play next, but meanwhile his son, Charlie Woods, is finding his own way to make headlines.

Charlie Woods’ high school boys golf team won the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A State Championship on Wednesday, as he helped The Benjamin School to a two-day total of 602 at Mission Resort and Club, in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

It was the fourth state title for Benjamin, which clipped First Academy by one and Episcopal by two.

Charlie, a freshman, shot 78-76, which tied him for 26th overall. He recorded his team’s fourth score on Day 1 and tied for his team’s second-best score on Day 2.

A video circulated on social media on Tuesday of Charlie chipping in on one hole. Some pictures of his famous father watching the tournament also made the rounds.

When Tiger was at Western High School in Anaheim, Calif., there were no state championships for golf; instead golf at that level was split into northern and southern regionals. Tiger won the southern regional once.

Tiger did win some big-time titles while he was an amateur, though — including three straight U.S Junior Amateurs and three straight U.S. Amateurs.

We’ll hear from Tiger soon enough, as his Hero World Challenge kicks off Nov. 30 at Albany in the Bahamas. There’s still one spot left in the field if Woods wants it (which largely relies on his health). Also coming up is the PNC Championship on Dec. 16-17. Tiger and Charlie have teamed up for this the past three years, but they have yet to officially commit for this year.

Charlie Woods accomplished something his father never did: Win a high-school state championship.

Charlie, the 14-year-old son of Tiger Woods, shot 154 (78-76) over two days at Florida’s state championships held at Mission Inn Resort. The freshman’s score was good enough to finish T-26 in the individual standings, and more importantly, one of four rounds that counted for his team, the Benjamin School, with the team’s 602 total capturing the Class A title.

Given his father’s illustrious amateur career—which included three U.S. Amateur and three U.S. Junior Amateur victories—it may seem odd that Tiger never won a state championship. That’s because when Woods was in high school the California Interscholastic Federation didn’t hold state-wide championships. It should be noted however, that Woods did win his regional in 1991 and was his section’s medalist three times.

Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods

Tiger and Charlie Woods have played in the parent-child PNC Championship the past three years, although the tournament has not publicly stated the duo is entered into this year’s field. The PNC, an unofficial event affiliated with the PGA Tour, begins Dec. 16.

Woods, 47, has not competed since the 2023 Masters as he continues to rehab following April surgery on his ankle.

Charlie Woods is a state champion.

The 14-year-old Woods, a freshman at Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, tied for 26th individually to help Benjamin to the Florida High School Athletic Assocation’s Class 1A state team championship on Thursday at Mission Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Woods fired rounds of 76-78-67 in rainy conditions and ranked fourth on his team behind Jake Valentine (T-8), Brooks Colton (T-12) and Pavel Tsar (T-18). Woods also chipped in during his second round.

Benjamin edged The First Academy by a shot. Pine Crest junior Alexander Weinberg won the individual title.

Woods has yet to commit the next month’s PNC Championship, which he has played in each of the past three years with his dad, Tiger.

Another wild year of golf is coming to an end, thankfully with a final event where players won’t be asked if they’re going to LIV Golf next year.

The PNC Championship is a family affair, with major champions and their sons/daughters/parents teaming up for a fun two-round scramble at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

Tiger and Charlie Woods will get the most attention, they finished second two years ago and Tiger is fond of saying that Charlie carries him. Yet Tiger is feeling better about his own game, as two weeks ago at his Hero World Challenge he said he could play monthly on Tour in 2024.
