ANTWERP, BELGIUM — Friday night’s all-around final at the world gymnastics championships at Antwerp’s Sportpaleis ended with a one-woman show: Simone Biles on floor.

Her routine, fittingly set to Israeli pop star Noa Kirel’s Eurovision song “Unicorn,” is arguably the best 90 seconds in women’s gymnastics, more art exhibit than sporting effort. Each time the 26-year-old performs the routine, it gets better, her tumbling passes higher and more powerful yet also more controlled. On Wednesday, it clinched Team USA’s seventh straight world championship title. On Friday, despite a stumble at the beginning of her leap sequence, it sealed Biles’ sixth world all-around gold.

“I was emotional because I won my first world title here and now we’re back,” Biles said after the medal ceremony, where she appeared to wipe away tears. “It means everything to me, the fight and everything that I put in to get back to this place and feel comfortable and confident enough to compete. And you guys are never going to believe me, but I’ve also had something in my eye for like four hours today that I could not get out.”

This ending to Biles’ decade-long world championship story — if it is, in fact, an ending — seems predetermined, as if the scriptwriters who crafted her remarkable career planned all along to call back to its beginning. “Full circle,” Biles said after making the six-woman team in September.

She won her first world all-around title in this arena 10 years ago as a 16-year-old virtually unknown on the international scene. She wore braces and a pink leotard and for the last time in her career, was not the favorite to win. When she did, beating multiple Olympic and world champions, the announcer mispronounced her first name.

Simone Biles

Now she is a six-time world all-around champion and the leader of Team USA whose first name (and its pronunciation) has become so widely known it’s unnecessary to even mention her last.

Biles, however, insists she was not in the writers’ room when they wrote this part of her story. Instead, she says she’s just going with the flow, blowing wherever the wind — and her coaches, Cecile and Laurent Landi — take her next. “I honestly don’t think I made a conscious decision,” Biles said last month about her return to international competition. “I really don’t think it was set in stone how far I was going to go.”

Last year, Biles walked back into World Champions Centre, the Houston gym her parents own, without a plan. She’d taken more than a year away from gymnastics after withdrawing from all but one event at the Tokyo Olympics because of a dangerous loss of aerial awareness gymnasts refer to as the “twisties,” and wasn’t sure if she would ever return to competition. She didn’t know if she would regain her ability to twist or land the elite skills that kept her at the top for so long.

She’d been working with a therapist and wanted to exercise, wanted to feel the feeling of doing elite gymnastics, wanted to know if she could still do it. Not necessarily because she wanted to compete again, but because she wanted to know that she could.

Then, over margaritas at a Mexican restaurant with Cecile in the spring, Biles tossed out the idea of training in earnest. “She said, ‘I want to give myself a chance,'” Cecile said. “That’s when we knew we had to make a plan without telling her we had a plan. Because we knew the plan would freak her out.”

Could it be that the world’s most decorated gymnast and the most famous female popstar will both be at Lambeau Field this Sunday?

There’s still no official confirmation on whether Taylor Swift will be in attendance at this weekend’s Packers-Chiefs game, but Simone Biles said she will be.

An image of Swift and Biles sharing a suite, cheering on their respective teams, just might break the internet. After all, they’re two of the country’s most powerful and accomplished women in their fields.

It’s unlikely we’ll spot Swift wearing a cheesehead or sporting the classic Packers green since she’s dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Biles, on the other hand, is a Packer through and through now that her husband, Jonathan Owens, is a Packers safety.

Putting the opposing team rivalry aside, could this be the start of a beautiful friendship between Swift and Biles?

It’s not clear whether the two have met in-person, but they definitely know of each other (how could they not?) and have conversed over social media, sharing mutual admiration and praise.

Swift narrated Biles’ introduction before bronze-winning beam routine at Tokyo Olympics

The world anticipated Biles to not only return to the Olympic stage in Tokyo in 2021 but to dominate the competition, since she won gold in the all-around five years’ prior and showed no signs of slowing down. (The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)

But she withdrew from all-around event as well as the team final, citing her mental health. Biles ended up competing on the beam, winning bronze.

Gold or bronze no matter, one superstar was rooting for her and singing her praises. Ahead of her routine, Biles’ video introduction on NBC was narrated by Swift who called Biles a hero.

“Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents,” Swift said. “Her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that had long been her signature.”

Biles said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the video made her cry, gushing that she loves Swift.

Swift responded that she cried watching Biles perform and thanked her for her resilience: “I cried watching YOU. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you.”

Biles teases possible Swift meet-up at Lambeau

Back in October on the “Today” show, Biles said that, since her season was over, she’s excited to spend the holidays in Green Bay supporting her husband.

“Today” co-anchor Hoda Kotb asked whether Biles would be at the Dec. 3 game between the Packers and Chiefs, saying she’d love a Swift-Biles photo op.

Devin Haney will vacate the remaining three lightweight titles he holds having ‘outgrown’ the division.

The undefeated and formerly undisputed star has his debut in the super-lightweight division in December against Regis Prograis.

Although the fight has been signed for some time, Haney had only lost one of his belts – the WBC – and was apparently considering appealing to hold on to the rest in case he should decide to return to 135.

Now, he has said there’s nothing left to do at lightweight an interview with ESPN.

After he battles for Prograis’ WBC 140 Title, the field opens up down at 135.

Gervonta Davis is currently the WBA Regular Champion, meaning he will either be elevated to super champ or fight for it, but more likely the former.

The IBF is now set to be contested for by Vasily Lomachenko, who is slated to face fellow former champion George Kambosos Jr in Australia in early 2024.

The WBC belt – taken from Haney separately earlier in the year – was fought for and won by Shakur Stevenson recently, who out-jabbed Edwin De Los Santos for it this month.

Lomachenko is also highly rated with the WBO, but, should he indeed fight for the IBF, the next two contenders are Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and Denys Berinchyk.

Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed triumph over Jermell Charlo on Saturday immediately put Canelo as the belle of the ball again and everyone wanted to dance with him, including Terence Crawford who would have to jump 3 weight classes to face the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

Terence Crawford went to the Canelo vs. Charlo fight to witness firsthand how his would-be opponent moves, to study and even enjoy a show, after the match he was seemingly disappointed by Charlo’s performance and even made a series of tweets about it

Fighting Crawford is not the plan according to Canelo

Crawford mentioned that he was willing to do what it takes to fight Canelo, including jumping three divisions to have a legacy-defining fight against the undisputed champion, however, Canelo was quick to respond “I always say if a fight makes sense, why not? But he is not in the plan.”

Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez

At this point it is too early to determine who Canelo will fight next, as both Benavides and Bivol sound plausible, meanwhile, Bud Crawford is in negotiations to honor a rematch with Errol Spence Jr. on April.

Whatever his intentions are, Terence Crawford is closer to fighting Jermell Charlo than Canelo, as many pundits believe that it would also be good to see Crawford jump fewer weight classes to meet the so-called ‘lion’ and try to make him look like a “cub“.

At the end of the match, Canelo was proud of his accomplishments, “I love you guys. I love my family, my friends who come to support me. Thank you so much. I’m a strong fighter all the time. This Canelo, nobody can beat this Canelo. He’s a great fighter, he knows how to move in the ring. We worked on [going to the body.] For three months without my family, without everything. But I still love boxing. I love boxing so f***ing much. Boxing is my life. Boxing makes me the person I am today.”

Hello friends and happy Friday from the U.S. Open!

A few small notes right off the bat: this event has the best media center food I’ve ever had, the baristas are putting a fun touch on my vanilla lattes AND I recapped the Taylor Swift concert with Michael Greller and Bones Mackay.

Also, Los Angeles Country Club is a tough walk. I’m putting in about 17,000 steps a day and I still haven’t seen parts of the course yet.

I want to give a special shout-out to Salma Ibrahim, the junior reporter who helped cover the tournament on Wednesday. Salma hung out with Kira Dixon, met players and grilled Max Homa in his presser. I got to show her what a day in my life looks like on-site at a major championship, but I’m not sure she needed much of my help — she’s already a star.

I need to really take advantage of my gig now, because Salma is 100 percent coming for my job in a few years.

Charlie Woods at LACC

Tiger Woods hasn’t played in a U.S. Open since 2020, but another Woods was on property at Los Angeles Country Club on Thursday: Charlie. He’s gotta be the only 14-year-old with an inside-the-ropes pass this week. Trust me, those things are not easy to come by.

This is the only photo I’ve seen of Woods at LACC, which is pretty impressive because the golf world is obsessed with the kid. I can’t help but wonder who is in charge of the recent eighth-grade graduate out here. Is someone making sure he’s staying hydrated? Putting on sunblock? This is the supervision my little brother needs on a regular basis.

Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods

It looks like Charlie is having an all-time Los Angeles golf week. He teed it up at Riviera the day before making it out to LACC.

That swing looks pretty good, too. Not a bad way to kick off summer vacation! I spent my summer after 8th grade babysitting my siblings for free, but to each their own.

Phil’s kicks

It took me a while to get used to Tiger in FootJoys. Once Dustin Johnson started rocking them too, I pretty much thought I had seen it all golf footwear-wise. But nothing prepared me to see Phil Mickelson rocking Jordans on the golf course.

Seeing a 53-year-old man in those kicks reeks of Steve Buscemi in the “how do you do, fellow kids?” meme, but Phil has always transcended his age, so I have no choice but to respect his fashion choice here.

I checked out the Surgeon’s website, and he has a pair of kicks listed at $5,000 and another at $10,000. If you’re not sure how to spend your tax return next year, there’s an idea for you.

USGA’s jokes

The U.S. Open may be the toughest event to qualify for, but once you get here, the USGA is pretty relaxed. Over the years, the governing body has had its fair share of fun with players, from Max Homa’s giant credential to Webb Simpson’s locker nameplate. This year, they’re having a lot of fun with the players at LACC.

It started off over the weekend, when the USGA presented Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler with a tandem bike instead of their Lexus courtesy car.

Phil Mickelson took to social media to call out the PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, to leave his coveted seat, blaming him for not listening to him prior to his sudden and unplanned move to LIV, because he had asked Monahan plenty of times to bring bigger investors for better events with elevated prize purses. But Monahan paid no heed to his pleas.

Phil Mickelsom highlighted that the commissioner lost the faith of the golfers because the signing of the merger between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour was carried out under the table. Even Tiger Woods reflected on his frustrations on this matter.

Like Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods Visibly Frustrated Over PGA-LIV Future

Woods, in a press conference post round one of the Hero World Challenge, talked about how the signing of the agreement was a shock to the players, and his inclusion in the management was a dire need of the hour.

While Phil Mickelson has lost faith in Monahan for his doings, Woods still chooses to believe him. “I did have faith in Jay and in what he could do going forward”. He concluded the interview by saying that whatever happened in the past cannot be repeated, and he will make sure that it never happens again.

It is unlikely that Monahan will be replaced before the PGA Tour gets financial backing for the next year. Either it would be LIV or some other contributor. For now, despite Monahan’s assurances, it seems unlikely that the framework agreement will be finazlized before December 31st.

The name of Terence Crawford, continues to sound as one of the possible rivals of the undisputed super middleweight champion, the Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and now that the American fighter launched a comment where he questioned the punching power of the Mexican.

Crawford became undisputed champion, after a spectacular demonstration over Errol Spence Jr., whom he knocked out forcefully last July 2023. And now, he talked about what a hypothetical fight between undisputed fighters would be like for him, assuring that he is not afraid of Canelo‘s punch.

“I can’t get in a ring thinking if this guy hits me he’s going to knock me out, or if he connects he’s going to break my rib. I wouldn’t even consider a fight if I think I can’t handle that level of punching, but (Canelo) isn’t Deontay Wilder or anything like that,” Crawford said in an interview with FightHub TV.

Terence Crawford

Is a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford viable?

However, he considered that if the fight against the Mexican were to happen, it would be a great fight because both would be on equal terms, because auqnue currently there is a considerable difference in weight, their dimensions are similar.

Canelo is a big guy, but at the same time I believe in my skills…he’s a heavy guy, but he’s not a big guy. He’s 5’7″ and I’m 5’7″ too. That fight would be good,” he said.

Should a fight between the two fighters materialize, Crawford would have to move up at least 19 pounds, from 147 to 168 pounds, to challenge the undisputed super middleweight title held by the Mexican

Gervonta Davis reacted to the news that he will become the sole WBA lightweight titleholder with a surprising rejection.

As with all WBA ‘regular’ champions, those holding the secondary strap automatically become the complete ruler when the ‘super’ champion vacates.

However, it seems Davis isn’t one for accepting belts without winning them inside the ring.

Gervonta Davis responds to WBA title elevation

He told the WBA: “I don’t want that s***!” in response to an occurrence that has probably already happened.

A swift look at the WBA rankings still shows Devin Haney as the main champion. But that is set to change after “The Dream” confirmed his intention to relinquish all the lightweight belts in his possession.

Haney had been stripped by the WBC previously despite holding undisputed status. Shakur Stevenson won that crown in a drab clash with Edwin De Los Santos last week in Las Vegas.

That leaves the IBF, WBA, and WBO, which – once Davis is elevated, will only leave two vacant titles.

Gervonta-Davis

WBO and IBF lightweight titles

The IBF could announce its version over the next few days. Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. are heading towards a massive match-up in Australia for the strap.

WBN also understands that the WBO could be on board with the fight. Lomachenko is the number one contender with the body. However, they have a decision to make as Kambosos is currently unrated at 135 with the organization.

As for Davis, his next fight remains up in the air following his victory over Ryan Garcia. A subsequent spell in prison has left Davis content on the sidelines.

Al Haymon is still finalizing the details of a new TV deal, potentially with Amazon Prime. Therefore, Davis must decide whether he’s on board with possibly campaigning on some Amazon Prime paid platform moving forward.

Whether that’s with a WBA title defense at 135 or a move up to 140 remains to be seen.

Simone Biles is back in the gym!

The gymnastics champion, 26, posted a selfie of her in the middle of a training session on Tuesday, just over a week after her winning turn at the World Gymnastics Championships in Belgium earlier this month.

In the Instagram Stories snap, Biles pouted at the camera as she posed inside a gym. She wore a black and white leotard and a couple of sweatbands on each wrist.

“Back at it,” Biles wrote on the selfie.

Her latest snap comes days after she shared a carousel of photos showing what she got up to in Belgium while competing overseas with Team USA.

In the post — which was captioned, “album: Belgium 💌” — one photo showed Biles posing with teammate Joscelyn Roberson as the pair stood in front of the Brabo fountain in Antwerp.

Biles and Roberson were seen in another snap alongside teammates Leanne Wong, Kaliya Lincoln and Shilese Jones. The group smiled as they posed together with their arms around each other.

Other photos in the carousel included a fresh-faced selfie of Biles as she sat on a bed in a hotel room. Another photo showed the champion flashing a big grin as she stood by a wall wearing her gymnastics outfit.

Additional photos from the trip included one of Biles holding a glass of a fruity beverage and another of a chalk bowl with notes with words of affirmation stuck on it that read, “You’re awesome,” as well as, “And you’re doing great.”

Biles became the most decorated gymnast of all time this month after winning 34 medals across world championships and Olympics — including her sixth all-round world championship gold in Belgium.

On Friday, the champion shared her reaction to having a fifth gymnastics skill being named after her following her record-breaking title.

“World championships!!!!! Whew Antwerp will always hold a special place in my heart,” Biles wrote on Instagram. “The first time I got a skill named after me was in this arena & 10 years later I got my 5th skill named…”

She continued, “I’m speechless. I’m honored. I’m excited and I’m blessed! Doing it for the little girl who fell in love with the sport!!!!!”

Simone Biles made a surprising admission to a fan on social media after she became the most decorated gymnast of all time.

On Friday, the superstar gymnast, 26, won her sixth all-around world championship gold, and grabbed the record for most international gymnastics medals in the history of the sport. Then again on Sunday she claimed three more awards as the 2023 world championships wrapped up. She now has 37 medals across the world championships and Olympics.

On Sunday, one of Biles’ fans posted a thought that inspired the gymnast to open up to her fans. “Remember like five months ago we didn’t think Simone would ever compete again,” a user named Grace wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Biles saw the post, shared it, and added a handful of teary-eyed emojis. She wrote, “real talk I didn’t think so either,” in her post on Sunday morning.

Biles returned to gymnastics earlier this year following a two-year break, during which she tied the knot with her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens.

Simone Biles

The couple wed in April in a courthouse ceremony before celebrating with a second wedding ceremony in Cabo San Lucas where they were joined by 140 of their nearest and dearest.

In August, Biles told PEOPLE that she was nervous about getting back into competing, despite having seven Olympic medals under her belt. “I feel like in the very beginning I was very nervous, obviously to step back out there because a lot of athletes when they take a couple years off, you have a little bit of doubt if you’re going to even be the same athlete you were, how strong you were going to be,” she said.

“So classic, I kind of tiptoed my way in there, just tried to get the meet done and over with, kind of make sure I still had that confidence and that belief in myself.”

Owen, 28, celebrated his wife’s historic accomplishment in a post on social media over the weekend. “You deserve it, just getting rewarded for all your dedication and hard work,” Owens wrote on X. “Blessed to be able to witness the greatness first hand. I love you so much, I’m so happy for you baby.”

During the medal ceremony, in which Rebeca Andrade took silver and the United States’ Shilese Jones took bronze, Biles dabbed back tears.

“I was emotional because it was my first worlds here, 10 years ago, and then now my sixth one, so it’s crazy,” she said in an interview following the competition on the Peacock broadcast. “But I swear, I do have something in my eye that’s been bothering me for like four hours and I cannot get it out.”
