Floyd Mayweather knows, perhaps better than anyone, what it takes to become a star in the sport of boxing as he has been a part of the five highest-selling pay-per-view events in the sport.

‘Money’ recently named the three active fighters he believes are the biggest stars in boxing. Speaking with Andrew Capucetti of Inside Fighting, the International Boxing Hall of Famer stated:

Mayweather notably omitted Devin Haney, Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue from his list of boxing biggest stars. Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis are the only fighters who competed in 2023 and have sold more than one million pay-per-view buys. ‘

‘Money’ added that his legendary career in the sport has paved a blueprint for fighters of the modern generation to follow. Mayweather retired in 2017, with an undefeated 50-0 record.

As Otto Wallin recovers following a bruising recent defeat at the hands of Anthony Joshua, he has cast his eye forward to the upcoming undisputed fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.

Wallin is a former opponent of Fury who pushed him harder than many. Back in 2019, both men went the full 12 rounds and though ‘The Gypsy King’ won on the scorecards, Wallin inflicted a severe cut above Fury’s eye that could have seen the fight stopped.

Although he has not fought Usyk, he has been in with Joshua and when speaking to Boxing News, he was quick to recognise what a good job the Ukrainian did on the Brit when asked for his thoughts on the undisputed bout in February.

He then sounded a little less certain but ultimately stuck with Fury as the winner.

Wallin also recently shared an update on the damage he sustained to his nose during his fight with Joshua and backed his cornerman for pulling him out. He has vowed to come back this year once he is fully healed up.

Rory McIlroy shocked the golf world on Wednesday by taking a U-turn on his stance on LIV Golf. The Northern Irishman, in a series of statements, claimed that the breakaway tour led by Greg Norman has “exposed the flaws in the system” of golf. While McIlroy’s comments faced backlash from fans of the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson, one of his biggest critics, came out to back the Irishman.

The LIV Golf star noted he was fully in favor of his rival’s change of opinion. He lauded McIlroy’s comments and said that they’ve paved the way for the two sides to ‘let go of hostilities and work towards a positive future.’

Interestingly, the 53-year-old credited Jon Rahm by stating that the Spaniard’s LIV signing has ‘turned into a bridge’ to bring the two fighting sides together. Furthermore, he even called on a rule change to allow the Masters champion and other LIV players on the Ryder Cup.

Reacting to Rory McIlroy’s comments on LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

It is pertinent to note that Mickelson shared a post carrying McIlroy’s comment while giving his reaction.

It’s Phil Mickelson this time with a peace offering! The headlines in the golf world were filled with the comments made by Rory McIlroy about LIV Golf a while back. Following the Northern Irishman’s change of heart, this time around, it’s the 53-year-old who extended his hand to the 4-time major champ, all the while pointing out how hard it must have been to admit his “mistake.”

The LIV golfer, in a tweet, mentioned how this is an “opportunity” to “let go of our hostilities.” Adding on, he indicated Jon Rahm’s signing to the Saudi-backed league as nothing short of “a bridge to bring both sides together,” all the while imploring the community to “work towards a positive future.”

The ‘Lefty’ shared the post on his X handle in response to a tweet made by NUCLR GOLF, which reiterated the 24X PGA Tour champ’s comments on the Middle Eastern league. The 34-year-old’s comment on how “judgemental” he had been with the players on the PIF-funded circuit had surprised many in the golfing world, including Tiger Woods’s ex-coach, Hank Haney.

Adding on, the 2-time PGA Championship winner, surprisingly, expressed his disbelief at the fact that the “PGA Tour has done so well for so long.” Moreover, he also commended LIV Golf by pointing out how it has done well to “expose the flaws in the system” while alluding to the inability of the PGAT to guarantee player participation to the sponsors. Well, after listening to the same, the six-time major champ couldn’t help but let bygones be bygones. However, this act by the professionals can’t help but make people wonder if it puts an end to the tussle between the duo.

Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy: The end to an era of feuds?

Phil Mickelson

Ever since the inception of the disruptive tour in June 2022, the two professionals have been engaged in a bitter tussle in the public domain. From taking a jab at McIlroy’s advocation of an “off-season” to work on his game to receiving one back for his gambling controversy, the pair have taken ruthless swipe after swipe at each other for a long time.

Following the inability of the four-time major champ to defend his title at the RBC Canadian Open, the American had tweeted how “LIV would be perfect for him,” alluding to the off-season comment, all the while indicating how he doesn’t think “there’s a team that wants him on it because they’d have to deal with all his BS.”

Was that all? Not even close! The 2011 U.S. Open champ, after the announcement of the $3 billion merger, expressed his ardent hatred for LIV Golf. He also mentioned how the defectors should be let back in while alluding to the likes of Mickelson and the rest. Down the lane, when the betting allegations against the 53-year-old came to light, McIlroy took to poke the pro in an interview by stating that “he can bet on the Ryder Cup this year because he won’t be a part of it.” ‘Twas ruthless, one must say!

This is but a short list of a long record of back-and-forth riff raffs between the two professional golfers. Anyhow, with the start of the establishment of a newfound banner of peace between the duo, coupled with the soon-to-be-finalized merger, one can’t help but wonder – does this paint the start of a new era in the sport? Only the future knows!

Zhilei Zhang believes he’s the perfect opponent for Anthony Joshua’s next fight.

‘AJ’ returned to the ring in Saudi Arabia last month on DAZN pay-per-view. There, he dominated former title challenger Otto Wallin, winning by fifth-round stoppage. While it was a big night for Joshua, he likely fought with conflicting feelings.

In the co-main event, Deontay Wilder suffered a lopsided decision defeat at the hands of Joseph Parker. In the process, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ blew up a scheduled March 9 date with Joshua. Despite hopes that the contest would proceed irrespective of the loss, Eddie Hearn confirmed it was off this week.

Along with that, he revealed that Joshua would still return in March. In a recent interview, the promoter stated that the British boxer would meet one of three men next. Those potential opponents are Filip Hrgovic, Francis Ngannou, and Zhang.

‘Big Bang’ discussed the potential fight with Joshua in a recent interview with FightHype. There, he explained that he was the perfect opponent, given his wide appeal across the globe.

In the interview, Zhang stated through an interpreter.

It took us a while to get here, but Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will finally throw hands on February 17th, for all of the heavyweight marbles.

Fans have been torn on who they believe will win. Make room for Anthony Joshua on the couch of indecisiveness as he’s thought long and hard on how things will play out.

Fury, like always, will have a gigantic size advantage. But size doesn’t always win fights. Joshua, on two separate occasions, towered over Usyk. His biceps were also twice Usyk’s size. Yet, even with all of the physical advantages in the world, Usyk managed to kick Joshua off his throne in their first meeting. In the second, he kept him off it.

tyson fury and oleksandr usyk

That personal experience with Usyk makes the Ukrainian hard to beat – even for somebody as great as Fury.

“I don’t know,” said Joshua to Boxing Social when asked to pick a winner. “I’ve fought Usyk. I think he’s a phenomenal fighter and I think he has a great team around him. You’re only as good as your team and he has a great team around him. After being in the ring with him and studying him, still studying him now, I think he’s the one to edge it.”

For a long list of reasons, Joshua has never liked Fury. The way he conducts himself in the ring and the antics outside of it have simply rubbed the former unified champ the wrong way. But, Joshua doesn’t want his opinion to come across as either spurious or biased.

Usyk has a unique and perplexing style, one that no one, including Joshua, has been able to figure out. For that reason alone, the 34-year-old has a feeling that Usyk will do just enough to become an undisputed champion.

“Probably because of his experiences, his ring generalship, and ring craft. I think he’s top-tier.”

Robert Garcia, who briefly trained former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, believes he would have little to no problem in beating MMA veteran Francis Ngannou.

Garcia helped train Joshua for his 2022 rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, who retained his unified crown with a twelve round decision win.

After that fight, Joshua would part ways with Garcia and hire trainer Derrick James.

Joshua has since picked up three victories in a row. Last month, he traveled to Saudi Arabia to batter and stop Otto Wallin.

Joshua was slated to face former WBC king Deontay Wilder on a March date – but that scenario went up in smoke when Wilder suffered an upset decision loss to Joseph Parker last month.

The British star is still on track to return in March – with three names in the running to fight him.

Ngannou, a former UFC champion, is one of those names.

Back in October, Ngannou shocked most observers with his competitive performance against the division’s top man, WBC champion Tyson Fury.

Ngannou, who was making is professional debut, dropped Fury in the third round and fought him on even terms for much of the fight. In the end, Fury won a razor-close ten round split decision win.

Despite Ngannou’s performance against Fury, Garcia would expect Joshua to handle the MMA strongman with ease.

“It’s an easy fight for Joshua. Those fights shouldn’t even be sanctioned,” Garcia told ES NEWS.

“Ngannou, fighting the heavyweight champion of the world, Fury, it shouldn’t have been sanctioned. It’s a disrespect to boxing not to train one single day for that fight. It was embarrassing.

Garcia believes the majority of the top heavyweights of today are no match for many of the elite names in the 80s and 90s.

“In heavyweight boxing [of this era], none of these guys would hang with Mike Tyson, [Evander] Holyfield, [Larry] Holmes. That was different. Lennox Lewis would be doing really good now. He would beat most everybody,” Garcia said.

“Joshua is one of the good ones, but you can’t compare them to the 80s and 90s.”

Tiger Woods, as you may know, is a well-known prankster (although one of those pranks was childish).

This week, as he’s teeing it up with his son Charlie at the 2023 PNC Championship, he’s treating the kid like any other playing partner and playing a joke on him. While Charlie was in the middle of doing an interview with a reporter on the course in Orlando, Tiger was nibbling on a chicken finger. But instead of taking the last bite, he tossed it at Charlie, who handled it like a pro.

It’s a very funny clip.

Simone Biles is trending online after her husband revealed in an interview that he had no idea who she was when they met—and people are incredibly unimpressed.

Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history and widely considered the greatest of all time, is married to Green Bay Packers safety Jonathan Owens. The pair started dating in 2020 after they met on the celebrity dating app Raya.

On a recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast, Owens revealed he had never paid attention to gymnastics and when Biles made the first move, he had never heard of the four-time Olympic gold medalist before.

Angering people even further, when host Ryan Clark asked Owens if he considered himself “the catch” in their relationship, Owens quickly agreed that he did. He revealed he had also been “afraid to commit.”

“Literally had been on the app for a couple of days, man, and it’s like she pops up and, I’m like ‘Let me see who this is.’ I had never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity,” he said.

“I go do my workout, and I come back and I had some likes on my Instagram. I still waited and then I come back to my phone, and then she messaged me on the app like, ‘Hey.'”

He added: “I didn’t know who she was at the time, but the first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of followers so in my mind, I’m like, ‘OK, she got to be good.'”

While it may seem impossible for Owens to have never even heard of Biles, he claimed that while she was collecting medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016, he didn’t have access to networks that aired the games. He said: “When she won the Olympics, I was in college and we didn’t have NBC, we didn’t have Olympics channels and we’re in camp. So I’m not paying attention to, I never would have had a moment to where I would have watched.”

People online weren’t happy with Owens’ reasoning, with many taking to X to slam him for being disrespectful to his wife.

Newsweek reached out to a representative for Biles via email and contacted Owens via social media for comment on Friday.

“How utterly stupid & disrespectful. He should have kept all of that BS to himself. Damn, no one would know who he is if it wasn’t for Simone Biles. What man who is truly in love with a woman would try to diminish her in public or private. Simone needs to reassess this marriage,” one person posted.

“Simone Biles is trending because even as her husband is getting dragged, nobody knows his name,” another X user wrote.

“The man is delusional. Don’t nobody know him except as #SimoneBiles husband. Let the dragging begin!” a third person wrote.

A fourth added: “Mind you he went undrafted, was waived by two teams, hasn’t won a single championship and is all around a below average player so what in his mind would make him think HE is the catch?!”

However, not everyone has been vilifying the football player, as some people online have come to his defense.

“Idk [I don’t know] who dude is. But I know nothing about the Packers either. But he ain’t disrespect her at all. The interviewer boosted it into something else that it wasn’t,” one X user wrote.

Renowned American gymnast Simone Biles has been named the Female Athlete of the Year by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) for the year 2023. The year was one to remember for the world’s most decorated gymnast.

Biles collected her sixth all-around title at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, held in October. In addition to this, the four-time Olympic champion, was a dominant force as she won gold medals in floor exercise, balance beam, and team events.

Owing to Biles’ achievements, the International Sports Press Association named her as their Female Athlete of the Year. The AIPS media recently announced the same on social media by stating:

Biles came in first place as she garnered 353 votes that accounted for 9.68 percent of the total votes. Kenyan middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon finished behind her with a close 329 votes while Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati came third with 297 votes.

A panel of 405 sports journalists from 107 nations, who are members of the AIPS, made their decision by casting their votes. The AIPS was established in Paris in 1924 and is now based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Besides this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes the AIPS.

The 26-year-old athlete made a return to the sport in June 2023 at the 2023 U.S. Classic gymnastics event, the 39th edition of the competition. Simone Biles clinched three gold medals in the all-around, balance beam, and floor exercise events at the competition.

This was her first competitive appearance since she withdrew from several events at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 to focus on her mental health, citing the “twisties” – a mental block condition the gymnasts’ experience.
