In a recent development, Floyd Mayweather has spoken out about the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero fight. The fight is expected to unfold on 5th May, later this year. Meanwhile, his new mentor, Floyd, has promised a spectacular showing.
After ‘King Ry’ defeated Oscar Duarte in December last year, he has been in talks with Teofomo Lopez, Rolly Romero, and most prominently, Devin Haney. However, Lopez declined the fight offer, and the fight with Haney fell apart publicly, leaving Romero as the prime contender. So, Floyd took it upon himself to promote Garcia’s upcoming bout.
Floyd Mayweather Garcia’s promoter?
Turning to Instagram, the former world champion shared a poster of the fight and penned a note for the boxing world. “@kingryan Vs. @rolliesss One the most anticipated fights this year. I guarantee this will be action packed. This one right here is bombs away,” wrote Mayweather.
It’s worth mentioning that the pair were first spotted together strolling through Las Vegas. Following that, Garcia backed out of a fight against Devin Haney, which started rumors in the boxing world of Floyd influencing Garcia’s decision.
Both Garcia and Haney had agreed to fight each other on X (formerly Twitter), going as far as tweeting at each other. However, following Garcia’s change in decision, Haney and Garcia started a war of words on the platform. Now, joining the fray, Oscar De La Hoya, Ryan’s actual promoter, has made his feelings known about Garcia and Mayweather’s pair-up.
Oscar De La Hoya responds to Floyd Mayweather – Ryan Garcia pair-up
De La Hoya and Garcia are engrossed in an ongoing lawsuit concerning Garcia’s contract with Oscar’s Golden Boy Promotions. The feud between them started after ‘King Ry’ suffered his first career loss and felt abandoned by his promoter when Oscar failed to show up after the fight. Since then, Garcia has taken a liking to Oscar’s former rival ‘Money’ Mayweather.
Initially, Oscar seemed fine with them getting together. He even asked Garcia to soak up all the knowledge he could get from Mayweather, claiming it could only have a positive impact on Garcia’s boxing abilities. However, that changed when Oscar turned to his Instagram story, asking Floyd to back off if he was trying to promote Garcia.
Golden Boy has worked with Ryan Garcia since he turned pro, and together have made him the biggest star in boxing. We will make his fight with Rolly a huge event, as we always do. Floyd, if you want to give Ryan the secret to defense in the ring, that’s great. Other than that, if you are still a promoter like it says here, f*** off,” De La Hoya wrote in his story.
With Garcia finally settling on his next opponent, Floyd and Oscar are seemingly vying for the position of a promoter – for Garcia. However, Garcia’s newfound fondness for Mayweather suggests the old rivalry between Oscar and Floyd is about to reignite. Why do you think Floyd stepped in to promote Garcia’s potential fight? What will Oscar do next?
